February 27, 2016 | Men's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 31 Washington Huskies fell in a 4-1 match today to No. 22 Tulsa at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
“Today was another close match,” said head coach Matt Anger. “It was a good one but we're just a little frustrated that we were not able to get a win either yesterday or today.”
The match began with a battle for the doubles point, with Tulsa coming out on top in some close competition. Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer were first to finish, defeating Carlos Bautista and Juan Matias Gonzalez 6-3 on court two. On court one Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe fell to Okkie Kellerman and Matthew Kirby 6-4, with Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart falling in a close 7-5 match to Dominic Bechard and Dylan McCloskey on court three to give Tulsa the doubles point.
In singles the Golden Hurricane took an early 2-0 lead with Foley falling on court six to Kirby 6-1, 6-0. The Huskies were able to gain the point back however, as Douglas defeated No. 110 Bautista 6-4, 6-3 on court two. On court three McCloskey defeated Sommer 6-4, 6-3 and Sebastian Hawken fell 6-1, 7-5 to give Tulsa the 4-1 win. The remaining matches on courts one and four did not finish.
“This weekend was good for the freshmen to play in back to back matches like this, since we will certainly have this in conference and hopefully postseason play,” said Anger.
Washington will be back in action next Sunday when they host Minnesota March 6th at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. To keep up to date with the latest team news, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and check out our website at GoHuskies.com.
