Washington Finishes 12th At Nike Golf Collegiate
October 04, 2016 | Men's Golf
SEATTLE -- The University of Washington men's golf team finished the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational in 12th place against a competitive 15-team field that featured 10 teams ranked in the top 20 of the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. The three-day, 54-hole tournament took place at the historic par-70, 7,209-yard Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
After posting a 286 and 289 in the first two rounds, the Huskies had a tough final round, shooting a 303 (+23), bringing their total to 878 (+38).
"I'm disappointed with the tournament overall," head coach Alan Murray said. "We didn't perform anything close to what we are capable of. We made too many mistakes from good positions and were not sharp enough overall to compete against one of the best fields in the country. It's good to play in such a strong event early in the year as it gives us a clear idea of the areas we need to need to improve on. We will bounce back."
With a final round 839 (-1), No. 9 Vanderbilt won the tournament while No. 8 Florida was the runner-up, one stroke behind the Commodores. No. 12 Georgia finished third with an 851 (+11) and Oregon placed fifth at 859 (+19).
Junior Frank Garber was Washington's best finisher, earning a tie for 14th place with an overall 213 (+3). The Kirkland, Wash. native shot a 74 (+4) in the final round, pocketing two birdies, leading the Huskies with eight total. This placing marks his best finish of the season.
"Frank had a really strong tournament and finished in the top 15 individually," said Murray. "I'm really pleased for him and I hope he takes great confidence from a really fine performance."
Freshman Sam Warkentin claimed a share of 48th place after totaling a 222 (+12) for the tournament. He carded a 75 (+5) in Tuesday's round.
Freshman Henry Lee finished in a tie for 50th place. Lee posted a 79 (+9) in the third round to total a 223 (+13).
After shooting a 76 (+6) in the final round, junior Jordan Lu's overall 224 (+14) tied for 52nd place.
Rounding out the Washington lineup was senior Corey Pereira, who shot a 78 (+8) in the final round. Pereira tied for 60th place with a total 227 (+17).
Washington returns to action on Monday (Oct. 10) and Tuesday (Oct. 11) when they compete in the Alister Mackenzie Invitational hosted by Cal in Fairfax, Calif.
