Wainhouse, MacIver Homers And Strong Pitching Carry Purple To Sweep
October 28, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE - The Purple team used two home runs and another solid pitching outing to take game three, 3-1, and earn the sweep of the Purple and Gold World Series on Friday at Husky Ballpark.
Freshman Leo Nierenberg struck out three Gold batters and allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings to earn the win for the Purple squad. Gold threatened with runners in scoring position in the first and third innings, but Nierenberg was able to pitch out of both. Brendan Ecklebarger and Joe Wainhouse both added a scoreless inning in relief.
Offensively, Purple jumped out to the lead when Wainhouse hit a solo blast over the right-field fence to leadoff the top of the third inning. Team Purple added to their lead again in the fourth inning. With one out, Levi Jordan got on base with an infield single. MacIver then provided the difference in the game with a two-run home run to left field.
Team Gold responded in the sixth inning, when KJ Brady hit a leadoff solo home run to right field, marking Gold's first run of the series. Gold put two runners on following the home run, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the threat.
Alex Hardy closed out the game in the seventh inning to earn his second save of the series.
Jordan Jones took the loss for Gold after allowing three runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Lucas Knowles, Adam Davenport and Channing Nesbitt each threw a scoreless inning in relief for Gold.
The two teams combined for just eight hits on the night, with Levi Jordan the only player recording a multi-hit game.
The Huskies now look forward to their first game of the regular season on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Santa Clara.
