Purple Beats Gold, 9-0, In Second Game Of Fall World Series
October 27, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Purple team pounded out 10 hits and five pitchers combined to throw a four-hit shutout as Purple won, 9-0, Thursday in game two of the Purple and Gold World Series. Team Purple clinched yearly bragging rights in the three-game series, but Gold will have a chance to salvage the final game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
Freshman Chris Micheles of Puyallup, Wash. allowed one hit over the first three innings to set the pace for the Purple staff and earn credit for the win. Joe Wainhouse, Brendan Ecklebarger, Lucas Knowles and Tommy Costello – all newcomers – each threw a scoreless inning for Purple.
Three Huskies on the Purple squad had two hits apiece – Kyle London, Blake Burton and Ben Baird. London provided the biggest blow of the game depositing a three-run bomb over the left-field fence and into the bullpen in the sixth inning.
Baird scored three runs, drove in a run and had a pair of singles.
Purple jumped ahead in the top of the third scoring two runs aided by a couple errors and passed ball by Gold. Burton started the inning off with a single off Josh Burgmann, was sacrificed to second, took third on a passed ball and came around to score on a ground ball by Baird to third that was misplayed for an error.
Purples scored three unearned runs in the fifth to go up 5-0 before London provided three more runs with one swing of the bat in the sixth inning.
Purple added a final run in the seventh when Jacob Hirsh drove home Nick Kahle – who tripled to start the inning – with a two-out single.
Senior Josh Cushing led the Gold squad with two hits – both doubles.
Burgmann took the loss after allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits in three innings of work.
The Purple and Gold World Series wraps up Friday with first pitch at approximately 4:00 p.m.
