UW Hosts Final Two Home Matches Of Season This Weekend
October 25, 2016 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The final two home matches of the 2016 season have arrived for the Washington women's soccer team, as they will host Oregon on Thursday October 27th at 7 p.m. and Oregon State for senior day on Sunday October 30th at 3 p.m at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies have been playing their best soccer of the season as of late, but were unable to grab wins against two tough opponents this past weekend. Last Thursday UW faced No. 12 UCLA and surrendered two quick goals within the first seven minutes. However, the Dawgs battled back with a quick response in the 9th minute by Kimberly Keever, and tied the match 2-2 when Ava Lewis scored her first career goal at Washington in the 29th. The Huskies eventually fell in overtime.
Last Sunday, UW was able to match the high-caliber defensive play of No. 5 USC, forcing them to draw seven total offside calls, and keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard in the first half. However the tie was broken in the 49th minute, when USC got off a quick shot in front of the net to score the only goal of the match.
Oregon will enter Thursday's contest owning an 8-8-1 overall record, having gone 2-6 in the Pac-12. This past weekend the Ducks grabbed their first and second conference wins over Arizona and Arizona State, breaking a seven match losing streak. Maryn Beutler led the way for Oregon this past weekend, scoring goals in each win on her way to being named this past week's top Pac-12 Offensive player. Defender Caitlyn Wong claimed the second weekly honor for the Ducks, winning her second Defensive Player of the Week award of the season after leading her squad to back-to-back shutouts.
For senior day, the Huskies will host Oregon State, who owns a 6-9-2 overall record, and has gone 1-7 in conference play. They most recently picked up a win over Arizona State 2-0, before dropping a matchup with Arizona last weekend. Helene Haavik and Nikki Faris lead the team with 15 points each, with the senior defender Haavik scoring both team's goals in their 2-0 win over the Sun Devils. Junior Bella Geist has started all 17 matches in goal for the Beavers this season, owning a 1.52 goals against average with two shutouts. Oregon State will face the Washington State Cougars on Thursday before traveling to Seattle to face the Dawgs Sunday.
