October 25, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE Β β Β Three pitchers representing the Purple team combined to shutout the Gold squad, 2-0, Tuesday in game one of the Purple and Gold World Series at Husky Ballpark.
Β
Under clear blue skies along Lake Washington, starter Noah Bremer set the tone for the Purple squad, striking out five Gold hitters over five shutout innings. The junior from Berkeley, Calif. allowed just five hits and one walk to earn the win. Gold put runners in scoring position in three innings, but Bremer was able to work out the jams each time.
Β
Freshman Leo Nierenberg pitched a perfect sixth inning and junior Alex Hardy closed things out in the seventh to pick up the save.
Β
Offensively, Purple scored a run in the third and added an insurance tally in the sixth inning of the seven-inning tilt.
Β
Freshman Christian Jones led off the third with triple to right that just escaped the reach of a diving MJ Hubbs. He came around to score one batter later on a groundout by fellow freshman Ben Baird.
Β
Purple got some breathing room in the sixth when Kyle London reached on a one-out double down the left-field line and Jack Meggs followed with an infield hit that scored him all the way from second base. London never slowed down rounding third and beat the throw home from second baseman Nick Roberts on a close play at the plate.
Β
Sophomore Joe DeMers pitched excellent for the Gold squad, allowing three hits over five innings. He took the tough-luck loss despite allowing just two baserunners to reach scoring position.
Β
The two teams combined for 10 hits with no hitter collecting more than one knock.
Β
Game two of the Purple and Gold World Series is Wednesday at approximately 3:15 p.m.
