KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i – The University of Washington women's golf team currently sits in 10th place with an 18-over 620 (310-310) following the first 36 holes of the annual Pac-12 Preview hosted by the University of Hawai'I at the par-73, 6,372 yard Nanea Golf Club. The Dawgs were led by sophomore Wenyung Keh, who is tied for 25th.
"Overall, they really battled and never quit today against a really tough field but I think we got to ourselves a little too much today," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Tomorrow, we just need to reinforce to them to believe in themselves because they are as talented as anyone on the course."
The first day featured 36 holes and Keh finished with a 6-over 152 following rounds of 74 and 78. She sits 10 strokes out of first place and just six out of the top five. After a bogey in the first round, Keh responded with three birdies on the next eight holes to finish the first round at one-over. Following a birdie sandwiched in between two blemishes in round two, Keh finished her round with just one error to finish tied for 25th.
"I'm really proud of Wenyung and how she competed today," said Mulflur. "She's struggled a little with her confidence but really played well today especially with the windy conditions in the second round."
Sophomore Julianne Alvarez sits five strokes behind her tied for 38th at 11-over 157 after posting rounds of 78 and 79 during an up and down day one for the returning player. Freshman EunWon Park, playing in her first event in the top-five rotation, shares the same score as Alvarez after improving upon her first round by five strokes. Park opened the day with an 81 but rebounded with a 3-over 76 to close the day and jump 14 spots on the individual leaderboard.
Sarah Rhee rounded out the UW scoring contingent as she is just one stroke behind Alvarez and Park after posting a 12-over 158 with rounds of 77 and 81 to head into Tuesday's final round tied for 43rd. . Freshman Ellen Takada climbed 10 spots during her second round to sit tied for 53rd with a 16-over 162 (85-77).
No. 3 Stanford leads the field at 8-over 592 while No. 20 Arizona State and No. 30 Arizona are tied for second at 10-over 594. No. 1 UCLA is tied for seventh just eight strokes ahead of UW at 28-over 612.
