Scout Day, Purple and Gold World Series Highlight End Of Fall Ball
October 24, 2016 | Baseball
In what has become an annual tradition, around 40 professional baseball scouts gathered at Husky Ballpark on Friday to observe and evaluate the Dawgs during an intrasqaud scrimmage and drills.
The Scout Day event is the culmination of hard work put in during the off-season that allows draft-eligible Huskies and the younger Dawgs to showcase their skills and the improvements they have made over the summer.
Levi Jordan, a junior second baseman who is eligible for the draft this June, does not take for granted the chance to show off his talents in front of professional evaluators.
"We're lucky enough to have these guys out," said Jordan, an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection in 2016. "We're in a place and position right now where our team has a lot of attention on them, so it's cool to have a lot of scouts out here to see what we can do."
During the five-inning scrimmage, Noah Bremer, Joe DeMers, Greg Minier, Alex Hardy and Joe Wainhouse each took the hill and had solid – if not spectacular – outings. They faced five
batters each inning and giving the pitchers and hitters a chance to strut their stuff in front of watchful eyes.
While the pitching was strong, the hitters were also solid throughout the scrimmage. Wainhouse – who is poised to be a rare two-way player for the Huskies – showed his power by driving a ball into the right-center gap. K.J. Brady, Kyle London and Levi Jordan also doubled during the intrasquad.
Jordan also flashed his leather at second base, making a great diving stab in the hole and throwing out the runner at first. For a player like Jordan, he is well aware that he's got to show scouts that he is a well-rounded player and can someday help out a big-league club.
"I just want to show them that I can play," said Jordan. "Typically, most of our guys are undersized, so it hard for us to go high in the draft. I kind of want to prove them wrong and show them that we can play. We're ballers."
The Huskies wrap up fall ball this week with the Purple and Gold World Series. Games are scheduled to be played Tuesday (3:30 p.m.), Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) and Friday (4:00 p.m.) at Husky Ballpark. All games are subject to change due to weather conditions. For the latest game updates, check GoHuskies.com and the UW_Baseball Twitter feed.
