STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Washington women's golf team sits tied for 11th after a very windy and rainy first day at the prestigious Stanford Intercollegiate finishing the first 18 holes at 18-over 302. The three-day 54-hole tournament picks back up Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m., at the Stanford Golf Course. This is the second tournament of the season for the Dawgs, who opened the 2016-17 campaign with a team title earlier this week.
Weather played a key factor during the day as no team shot under par, which is very rare for this tournament featuring nine teams in the top 25 of latest rankings. Washington had a tough start to the day finishing the front nine 14-over but responded well closing the final nine holes at 4-over.
"We had a tough day today from a weather standpoint and we didn't handle it as well as we could have," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I was proud of our group for hanging in there. We bounced back in a strong way on the back nine with the same conditions, we just didn't come out of the gate very well. Tomorrow is a day to be tougher about the conditions because they will likely be the same."
The Huskies were led by sophomore Wenyung Keh who is tied for 18th at 2-over 73. She opened the day clean through the first four holes before recording bogeys over three of the next seven holes. After the turn she had a blemish on hole 11 but went 1-under over the next seven to finish the back-nine even par.
Sophomore Julianne Alvarez, who is fresh off of an individual tournament victory from the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, sits tied for 26th at 3-over 74. Like Keh, Alvarez had a better back nine as she finished at 1-over with a birdie on hole 12. Sophomore Sarah Rhee also closed out the day better than she started with a birdie on hole 17 and a par on 18 to finish at 6-over 77, tied for 60th.
Rounding out the UW crew was freshman Ellen Takada who is tied for 62nd at 7-over 78 and sophomore Clementina Rodriguez (T86th, +13).
Northwestern, who is ranked 17th, leads the field at 1-over 285 and is followed by No. 8 UCLA (3-over 287), No. 22 Arizona State (7-over 291) and host Stanford and USC who are tied for fourth at 8-over (292). San Diego State's Georgia Lacey leads the individual field at 4-under 67.
Round two starts at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday morning.
