January 31, 2016 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 43 Washington Huskies came out on top of an exciting match today with Portland, winning 4-3 at the Nordstrom Tennis Cetner to advance to 7-1.
The doubles Dawgs got off to a slow start as Kawika Lam and Mitch Stewart fell 6-1 to Kent Andreasen and Carlos Donat 6-1. Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe moved to court one today, and defeated Michail Pervolarakis and Felix Fan 6-4. Piers Foley and Enzo Sommer clinched the doubles point for the Huskies on court two, picking up the victory over Pierre Garcia and Alex Wallace 6-4.
The Pilots took the first point in singles to tie the match 1-1 on court five, with Sebastian Hawken falling to Jared Madison 6-4, 6-1. Enzo Sommer took the lead back for the Huskies however with a 7-5, 6-3 victory, moving him to 7-0 in dual match play. Portland quickly tied it back up as Donat defeated Lam on court six 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.
“If I was a spectator I'd be thrilled,” said head coach Matt Anger. “The college format is incredibly exciting the way the matches can build.”
The three ranked Huskies were last to finish, starting with No. 121 Jake Douglas on court two. He defeated Mathieu Garcia 7-5, 6-4 in a back and forth match to give the Huskies back the lead 3-2. The remaining two matches on courts one and three went to third sets, with Mitch Stewart falling to Pervolarakis 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 for his first loss of the season. With the Huskies and Pilots tied at 3-3, all attention turned to Gal Hakak and Pierre Garcia on court three. Tied in the third set at 4-4, Hakak powered through to the finish to get the win with a final score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, and clinch the victory for Washington 4-3.
“It was a heck of a win for us today in a 4-3 match, it was very exciting and I'm just glad we pulled it out,” said Anger. “As I look at our courts and how we did, certainly we can do better. My hat is off to Portland, they competed well and it was a fun match.”
The Huskies will be back in action on the road next weekend, as they will face No. 53 Indiana at 3 p.m. on Friday in Bloomington, IN. Make sure to keep up to date with the Dawgs on their website GoHuskies.com, and on social media on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
