Huskies Grab Ranked Win Over No. 57 Cal Poly
January 30, 2016 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 43 Washington Huskies added another ranked win to their resume today with a 6-1 victory over No. 57 Cal Poly.
In doubles, Kawika Lam and Mitch Stewart got the ball rolling on court three, with a strong 6-3 performance against Karl Enander and Aiku Shintani, while Piers Foley and Enzo Sommer fell on court one 6-4. It all came down to Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe who after a 5-5 tie, won two straight games for a 7-5 victory, and clinched the doubles point for the Dawgs.
“I think we came out strong in doubles,” said head coach Matt Anger. “At number one doubles we did lose the first game but I feel like we were right on it afterwards, that was the one game that was costly.”
Sommer was the first to grab a singles point as he won 6-2, 6-1 to remain undefeated in dual match play. Freshman Sebastian Hawken was next to finish against Axel Damiens on court five with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. No. 121 Jake Douglas won the third singles match to clinch the victory for the Huskies on court three, with a 6-2, 6-4 score.
“I'm very happy with the win tonight,” said Anger. “I think once we clinched the match we might've slowed down a little bit. But if that's our biggest complaint it's for a good reason, when you have four points on the board.”
The three remaining matches all went to a ten point tie-breaker, beginning with No. 84 Mitch Stewart on court one. He defeated Garret Auproux 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 to move to 7-0 in dual match play. Joao Barra fell to Shintani 1-6, 7-5, 11-9 while No. 122 Gal Hakak battled back after dropping the first set 4-6. Forcing the tie breaker against Ben Donovan with a 6-2 second set, Hakak won the tie-breaker 10-8.
The Huskies will be back in action on Sunday when they face the Portland Pilots in the Nordstrom Tennis Center at noon. Be sure to keep up with the Huskies on GoHuskies.com, and on social media by following us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
