Huskies Sweep Penn 7-0 For Second Win On Weekend
January 24, 2016 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 45 Washington Huskies turned in a great performance today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, with a 7-0 victory over Pennsylvania to bring their record to 5-1.
The Huskies came out of the gate strong, leading all courts in doubles halfway through. However Nicholai Westergaard and Austin Kaplan came back to defeat Piers Foley and Enzo Sommer on court one 6-3. The remaining two games finished almost simultaneously, each with a score of 6-2, to give the Dawgs the early 1-0 lead.
“I've seen Penn play before, they played a very close match yesterday against East Tennessee State,” said head coach Matt Anger. “I don't think the scores today really indicate just how close some of those matches were.”
In singles the first to finish were freshmen Sommer and Sebastian Hawken. Sommer won his match 6-1, 4-0 (ret.), while Hawken picked up his fourth dual match singles win of the season 6-2, 6-1. Joao Barra was not far behind, as he grabbed the match clinching win over Westergaard on court five 6-2, 6-2.
The three ranked Dawgs were last to finish, as No. 121 Jake Douglas defeated Matt Nardella on court four by a score of 6-3, 6-2. No. 84 Mitch Stewart battled back after dropping the first set, to pick up a win 2-6, 6-0 (8-8, def.), while No. 122 junior Gal Hakak locked up the 7-0 sweep by defeating Josh Pompan 6-3, 6-3.
“I'm very happy that we were able to get all of those points, but we've got a few things we still need to iron out,” said Anger. “I'm very confident that we can keep getting better from here.”
The Huskies will be back in action with another set of home matches next weekend, as they host Cal Poly on Friday and Portland Sunday. Keep up to date with the Huskies at GoHuskies.com or on social media by following us on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, or adding us on Snapchat.
