ORLANDO, Fla. – Despite rainy and wet course conditions, the University of Washington Huskies saved their best round for last at the stacked ANNIKA Intercollegiate as they carded a 4-under 284 on the final day of the three-day tournament to climb two spots and finish eighth at 1-over 865. The Huskies' score tied for the second-best out of the 12 teams during the third round and was six strokes better than their day two total of 290.
“It was really impressive to see how our team performed today, especially with the conditions we had to play through,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “The team as a whole was so tough and determined, just really resilient which was great to see, especially out of the three freshmen. They just really stepped up.”
Freshman Julianne Alvarez posted UW's best round of the 54-hole play event on Tuesday as she knocked in three birdies en route to a 3-under 69. Alvarez climbed 18 spots during the week after opening with an 80 (+8), followed by an even par 72 on Monday and her final low of 69 (-3) to finish tied for 40th (+5, 221). Additionally, she was one of just six in the 60-person field to shoot under 70 during the final round.
“Julianne played bogey free golf today and to see her climb from last place on Sunday to 40th today was extremely impressive,” added Mulflur. “She just hunkered in and battled and played her game today.”
Senior Charlotte Thomas was UW's top overall finisher as she jumped seven spots Tuesday with her tournament low round of 2-under 70. Thomas carded a three-day total of 2-under 214 to finish tied for 16th overall. Fellow senior Ying Luo also earned a top-25 finish with her three-day score of even-par 216 to tie for 25th (73-71-72).
“Charlotte continued her solid play, and finally got some of her puts to go during this round,” said Mulflur. “Overall, it was a good season-opening tournament for her.”
Coming in tied for 34th was freshman Wenyung Keh after she notched a total score of 3-over 219 following a 1-over 73 in the final round. Playing in her first tournament as a Husky, Keh competed at the one spot in the rotation and was matched up against some of the top players in the nation during the three-day event, including the reigning player of the year, Leona Maguire out of Duke.
Rounding out the squad was freshman Sarah Rhee who tied for 47th, carding a 3-day score of 8-over 224. Rhee, the reigning WIAA 3A State Champion, started the day with a triple bogey on her second hole but bounced back to fire four birdies closing out her first nine holes at one under. She finished the day with a 3-over 75 after earning scores of 75 and 74 during the first two rounds.
USC took the team title with a 36-under 828 while the Trojans also earned the individual crown behind Karen Chung's 12-under 204.
The Dawgs return home next week to host the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Oct. 6-7 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
