Huskies in Third After Day One of Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational

SAMMAMISH, Wash. – The University of Washington women's golf team closed out the first day of the annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational strong as they posted the lowest score of the second round with a 5-over 293 to finish the day third overall (+18, 594). The two-day 54-hole annual event hosted by the Dawgs is being played at the par-72, 6,039 yard Sahalee Country Club.
“It was a long day for us and we just came out really flat this morning which is kind of unusual since we're playing at home,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “But the good news is that again, on a 36-hole day, the team played better in the afternoon. We had the lowest second round and even though (leader) Cal has a pretty nice cushion, there is a lot of golf left. We just can't come out flat tomorrow in this final round.”
Four of the five Huskies improved up on their round one score over the second half of the day led by senior Charlotte Thomas, who closed out action with a 2-over 146 to finish tied for fifth. Thomas opened the day with a 74 but followed it up with an even-par 72, which included three birdies over her bogey-less final nine holes, to climb 11 spots on the leaderboard.
“Charlotte didn't start the day well, but man she really poured it on at the end of the day, so overall, I was pleased with how she did out there,” said Mulflur.
Freshman Wenyung Keh was the Dawg's second best finisher as she jumped seven spots between rounds one and two to sit tied for 13th heading into the final round. Keh shot a 75 in the morning but bounced back with a 1-over 73 thanks to four birdies to finish the day at 4-over 148. Fellow newcomer Sarah Rhee isn't far behind as she posted a 5-over 159 for 20th.
Senior Ying Luo climbed 16 spots during the two rounds after opening with a 7-over 79. Luo knocked in two birdies with just three bogeys to improve her score by six strokes at 1-over 73 during round two finishing the day with an 8-over 152, tying for 34th. Freshman Julianne Alvarez also carded a first-round score of 79 but was able to respond with a 3-over 75 to help her jump up 10 spots, tying for 40th head-ing into Tuesday's final around.
“To have Ying and Julianne both shoot 79 in the morning is very uncharacteristic, so it was good to see them bounce back in the afternoon,” added Mulflur. “I know Julianne's ball striking was not very good today but boy she really scrambled and got out of a lot of trouble.”
The Dawgs also had two newcomers competing as individuals in Chloe Corriveau and Clementina Ro-driguez. Corriveau posted an overall score of 10-over 154 and sits tied with Alvarez for 40th while Rodri-guez's 18-over 162 places her in 63rd.
California leads the 13-team field with a 5-over 581 while San Diego State is 10 strokes back at 15-over 591. Individually, Gonzaga's Bianca Pagdanganan carded the day's low score of 2-under 142.
The Dawgs return to the links at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning where they will be paired with Cal and SDSU.
“For us tomorrow, I just told our team that we need to take a look and really figure out why we came out flat this morning,” said Mulflur. “We know we have the talent, that's not the issue so let's go and do what we know works.”
