SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Washington freshman Wenyung Keh led the Huskies on the final day of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational as she posted the first top-five finish of her UW career, with a 5-over 221 tying for fifth. Keh carded a 1-over 73 to climb eight spots on the leaderboard Wednesday and help UW place third overall. The Huskies finished at 35-over 899 during the 54-hole two-day event held at the Sahalee Country Club.
Conditions were tough for the field on Wednesday with only one player scoring under par and all 13 teams posting scores over 300. Playing through constant rainfall, San Diego State overtook California's 13-stroke lead to claim the team title at 28-over 892. The three atop the leaderboard, including Washington, pulled within three strokes of each other halfway through the round but the Aztecs finished with three birdies over the final four holes to earn the win.
“It wasn't your optimal day conditions-wise,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It didn't rain hard, it just rained the entire time. When it's like that, It can be tiring to be out there, trying to stay dry and stay focused and take care of it all. I was hoping we'd maybe play a little better than we did today since we ran into similar conditions in Florida and played great but overall we had some good performances, especially by Wenyung.”
Keh posted back-to-back 73s over the final two rounds and her score today tied for the third lowest of the day. The freshman from New Zealand opened the event with a 3-over 75 before moving seven spots between rounds one and two with her 73 to close the day out.
“Wenyung has really played well these first two tournaments,” added Mulflur. “Nothing really seems to bother her. Not who she's playing with, the weather or the golf course, she just goes out and plays, which is what she did this week.”
Charlotte Thomas notched her second top 20 finish in as many tournaments with her 7-over 223 placing her tied for seventh. The senior, who posted UW's overall low round of even-par-72 on Monday, finished out the event with a 5-over 221.
Fellow senior Ying Luo entered the day sitting tied for 34th after jumping 16 spots between rounds one and two. She continued that trend over the final day, climbing 12 more spots behind four birdies to finish tied for 22nd with a 12-over 228 (79-73-76).
“It was good to see how Ying responded after her first round,” said Mulflur. “I know she really wants to win an event this year and she's been learning you don't have to hit the ball perfect all the time, you just have to be able to score all the time. I don't think she had her best ball striking week but she managed to play well and finish strong so for her that has to be encouraging.”
Freshmen Sarah Rhee and Julianne Alvarez rounded out the UW contingent playing in the rotation as Rhee finished with a 14-over 230 for 35th and Alvarez carded a 17-over 233 to tie for 38th. Competing as individuals, freshman Chloe Corriveau and Clementina Rodriguez placed T49th (+21, 237) and T67th (+35, 251), respectively.
Gonzaga's Bianca Pagdanganan held on to her spot atop the leaderboard to claim in the individual title with a 1-over 217 (69-73-75).
The Huskies stay in the state for the next tournament, heading down to Tacoma for the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 12-13.
