TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Washington Women's Golf Team leads the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational field after 36 holes on Monday as it posted a team score of 4-over 580. The Dawgs are 24 strokes ahead of second place after two rounds which included 36 birdies, 21 in the first round alone.
“Everyone just played solid today and that's what we wanted to see at this early point in the season,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We have been really pleased with the progress that this team is making and 36 holes in one day is never an easy thing to do. Their willingness to learn and listen to our coaching has been so fun to work with. They're like an open book, asking good questions and honestly just wanting to continue to get better, so we're happy with what we've been seeing, including today's two rounds.”
UW also holds the top four spots on the individual leaderboard with freshman Julianne Alvarez sitting in first with her two-round score of 1-under 143. Alvarez, who was the only player to post an under-par score after 36 holes, opened the day with an even-par 72 knocking in six birdies along the way. She followed that up with five more birdies to finish with a 1-under 71.
“After her performance at the last tournament, it was good to see Julianne come out and really get it going today,” added Mulflur. “She didn't get flustered and really kept plugging along the way that we know she can so to see that progress was encouraging.”
Just a few strokes behind Alvarez in second place is senior Ying Luo as she carded a 2-over 146. Luo fired in six birdies on the day and posted scores of even-par 72 and 2-over 74. Senior Charlotte Thomas and freshman Sarah Rhee sit tied for third at 3-over 147. Thomas opened the day with a 1-under 71 after knocking in three birdies and finished with a 4-over 76. Rhee improved upon her round one score during the second 18 thanks to five birdies, as she posted a 1-over 73.
Rounding out the UW rotation was freshman Wenyung Keh who was tied for first after round one with her 1-under 71 but followed that up with a 7-over 79 and now sits in seventh with a 6-over 150. Com-peting as individuals, freshman Clementina Rodriguez posted an 8-over 152 (T16th) while freshman Chloe Corriveau carded a 15-over 159 (T50th).
Washington will look to defend its 2014 title at the event starting at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club.
