TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Washington Women's Golf team easily defended its title at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational hosted by Seattle University on Tuesday, cruising to a three-round score of 1-over 865, 31 strokes ahead of second place.
“The consistency of our play this week was a huge key in our win,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “The team as a whole played really patiently and just played really smart, which was nice to see with such a young group. And we really can't underestimate the leadership that we have seen out of our seniors, Ying Luo and Charlotte Thomas. They've been incredible leaders and teammates for this young squad.”
The Dawgs also claimed the individual title for the second-straight year with freshman Julianne Alvarez holding on to finish with the only under-par scorecard of the 54-hole event. Alvarez fired a three-round total of 5-under 211 which was capped by her season-low round of 4-under 68 over the final 18 holes Tuesday. The New Zealand native improved upon her score each round and collected 15 total birdies during the two-day event en route to winning her first title as a Husky.
“Even though she had the fewest birdies today, Julianne didn't have one blemish on her card, which was a testament to her staying patient throughout the round,” added Mulflur. “She played really great and that's what we expect out of her, she's that good of a player.”
Freshman Sarah Rhee also carded a sub-70 round on Tuesday as she finished with a season-best 3-under 69 to move her three-round total to even-par 216 for second-place overall. Rhee opened the event with a 2-over 74 before carding a 1-over 73 during the second 18 on Monday. Sitting at 1-over par with eight holes to play during the final round, Rhee rattled off four straight birdies to push her final score to a 3-under 69.
“Sarah just played awesome this week,” said Mulflur. “She could have had a few more birdies but for her to be at one-over and post four-straight under par was so promising to see.”
Joining the freshman duo in the top five was senior Ying Luo who carded a 4-over 220 for fourth overall and her first top five finish of the season. Fellow senior Charlotte Thomas was just behind her on the leaderboard placing tied for sixth to earn her second top 10 and third top 20 finish of the season. Thomas' final three-round total came in at 6-over 222 (71-76-75).
Freshman Wenyung Keh recorded her second top 10 finish of the season as she tied for 10th with an 8-over 224 (71-79-74) to round out the Huskies rotation. Keh carded six birdies over the 54-hole event including two during her final round. Individually, freshmen Clementina Rodriguez (14-over 230) and Chloe Corriveau (17-over 233) finished tied for 22nd and 33rd, respectively.
Up next, the Huskies head to the stacked Stanford Intercollegiate, which features five teams ranked in the top 10 nationally. The three-day tournament will take place Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 18-20 at the Stanford Golf Course (par-71; 6,130 yards).
