UW Tied For Second on First Day of Stanford Intercollegiate
October 19, 2015 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 21 University of Washington women's golf team showcased a strong effort over the first 18 holes of the stacked Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice on Sunday as it sits tied for second at 5-over 289. The Dawgs placed three in the top 15 including two freshmen and are just two strokes back from day one leader, host and defending national champion Stanford (3-over 287).
“This is definitely the strongest field we've seen since our season-opening tournament in Florida,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We stumbled a little bit but we know you can't win the tournament on day one, but you can put yourself out of it, so I was proud to see us stay the course and finish where we did today.”
Washington was led by senior Ying Luo as she carded a season-low 1-under 70 to place tied for third after the first round. Luo's day featured five birdies, including three on the front nine. Luo is four strokes back from Pepperdine's Marissa Chow who leads the field after firing a 5-under 66. UCLA's Bronte Law is in second with a 4-under 67.
“Ying had a very good round today,” added Mulflur. “She hit the ball really well and outside of a few slip ups on some tough par four's, she was very solid which was great to see from her.”
Freshman Sarah Rhee continued to impress for the Dawgs as she posted an even-par 71 Sunday and is tied for sixth heading into round two. Rhee is coming off her best finish of the season, placing second at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational just under a week ago. Rhee has been at even or under par in her last two rounds.
“She has just been extremely solid in these last two events,” said Mulflur. “Our freshmen as a whole have really stepped up for us which has been good to see, and Sarah is no exception.”
Finishing tied for 15th was freshman Wenyung Keh knocking in a 2-over 73. Just two strokes behind her was freshman Julianne Alvarez at 4-over 75, tying for 42nd and senior Charlotte Thomas at 5-over 76, tying for 55th.
The Dawgs were paired with reigning national champion Stanford and California during the first round and will match up with the Cardinal again alongside Pac-12 foe UCLA for round two.
“This group wants to be matched up with the best, they want to be play with the best and they don't get intimidated, which is great considering we are playing with three freshmen,” said Mulflur. “They do a really good job at staying in the moment and not getting caught up with the situation they are in, just playing golf as they know how.”
The field features No. 1 USC, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Northwestern, No. 6 Arizona, No. 9 Stanford, No. 12 UCLA, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 15 Iowa State, No. 21 Washington, No. 22 Vanderbilt, No. 28 Oregon, No. 35 Auburn, No. 43 California, Pepperdine, San Jose State, UC Davis and Washington State.
Round two of the 54-hole three-day event gets under way Monday morning at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course.
