Dawgs Seventh After Two Rounds at Stanford Intercollegiate
October 20, 2015 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 21 University of Washington Women's Golf team sits in seventh place heading into the final round at the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice with its overall card showing 15-over 583 following the second round on Monday.
“It was not our best day obviously, but the team battled really hard and that's all we're asking from them is effort and there was no question that's what they're giving,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “It's a learning process with this young group and it is hard sometimes but we know they are talented and we know they are learning something every time they go out and play, so we're just going to keep on growing and playing hard.”
The Dawgs finished the second round with two players in the top 15. Senior Ying Luo posed a 2-over 73 and is now tied for 13th after carding a 1-under 70 during her first round on Sunday. Her two-day score of 1-over 143 is eight strokes off of first place (Marissa Chow, Pepperdine).
“Ying has been really solid and honestly, two over is not a bad round on this course,” said Mulflur. “The course is playing really difficult and the nice thing about Ying today is that she was so patient with herself when things weren't necessarily going her way and that's all we ask for. Just be patient and work through it as opposed to getting frustrated so it was good to see that from her.”
Also sitting tied for 13th is freshman Wenyung Keh who posted UW's best score of the second round as she carded a 1-under 70 and is now at 1-over 143. Keh's round was steady as she hit par on 17 of the 18 holes with a birdie coming on hole two.
“Wenyung just went out and played her game today,” said Mulflur. “You could call it a boring round, hitting par with one birdie but it was solid and it was great to see her improve upon yesterday's round on a tough course against tough competition.”
Senior Charlotte Thomas also improved upon her round one score as she finished at 2-over 73 on Monday and now sits tied for 46th. Thomas shot a 5-over 76 on day one and was able to climb nine spots on the leaderboard following her 18 holes in the second round.
Rounding out the UW contingent is freshman Sarah Rhee who is also tied for 46th (7-over 149) and freshman Julianne Alvarez (14-over 156).
Stanford holds the team lead at even-par 568 followed by UCLA (3-over 571) and USC (9-over 577).
The Dawgs conclude play at the stacked tournament Tuesday morning, teeing off at 7:30 a.m. with California and Arizona.
