STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 21 University of Washington women's golf team placed a pair of golfers in the top 20 en route to an eighth place finish at the Stanford intercollegiate hosted by Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday. The Dawgs finished the three-day 54-hole event, which featured 10 teams in the nation's top 25, with a 28-over 880.
“We just came out a little flat today and weren't able to sustain any momentum,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We had more pars than anyone in the field, we just didn't have many birdies whatsoever which was probably the biggest difference.”
Host No. 9 Stanford claimed the team title at 5-under 847 followed by No. 1 USC (2-over 854) and No. 12 UCLA at 3-over 855. Washington finished ahead of No. 6 Arizona (ninth), No. 13 Arizona State (11th), No. 15 Iowa State (12th), No. 22 Vanderbilt (13th), No. 28 Oregon (10th) and No. 35 Auburn (17th).
The Dawgs were led by senior Ying Luo and freshman Wenyung Keh who both tied for 20th at 4-over 217. Luo opened the event with a 1-under 70 and followed that with a 2-over 73 and 3-over 74 to earn her second top 20 finish in as many events. Keh posed her third top 20 effort of the season earning scores of 73-70-74 during the week. The freshman has placed in the top 20 in three-straight events.
“This was a really tough field with some high level competition,” added Mulflur. “Ying and Wenyung stayed right there with them which was encouraging to see.”
Senior Charlotte Thomas finished the event with a 4-over 75 for a three-day total of 10-over 223, placing hre tied for 46th. Rounding out the UW rotation was freshman Sarah Rhee who came in at 11-over 224 to tie for 51st and freshman Julianne Alvarez who carded a 20-over 233 to tie for 75th.
“We have learned something with this group every time they take the course,” said Mulflur. “They're such a great group to work with and they really want to continue to get better. We're just focusing on helping them be patient while they are out there.”
The Huskies have one fall tournament remaining as they head to Kailua Kona, Hawaii to play in the Pac-12 Preview at the Nanea Golf Club, Monday-Tuesday, Nov. 2-3.
