November 03, 2015 | Women's Golf
“Overall it was a good day, just stubbed our toe a little bit coming in,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “The wind really picked up this afternoon as you can tell by the scores but I feel like we just played really solid. I'm really happy for Charlotte. She's struggled a little this fall so it's really good to see her have a breakout day and get her confidence going.”
Thomas opened the day with a 3-under 70 which featured five birdies on the tough par-73 course. She followed that up with her best round of the season firing a 4-under 69. Thomas finished the day with 12 birdies total and was one of just two players to post a sub-70 score during the two rounds on Monday.
Freshman Wenyung Keh is not far behind Thomas on the leaderboard as she sits tied for third at even-par 146. Keh climbed 10 spots during the second round of the day, posting a 1-under 72. Keh, who owns two top 20 finishes this season, tallied nine birdies and sits seven strokes off the lead.
Senior Ying Luo started the day with a 1-over 74 and followed that up with a 6-over 79 to tie for 26th. Freshman Sarah Rhee also fired a 1-over 74 during the first 18 holes before finishing the day with an 11-over 84 to place tied for 41st at 12-over 158. Rounding out the Huskies contingent was freshman Julianne Alvarez who came in tied for 48th after posting scores of 4-over 77 and 12-over 85 for a two-round total of 16-over 162.
No. 15 Arizona State and No. 6UCLA share the team lead for day one at 9-over 593, leaving the Dawgs just three strokes back.
“It was a tough day, but we learned a lot today dealing with some challenges and I was happy to see us in a position to have a shot at the lead tomorrow, added Mulflur.”
The final 18 holes get underway Tuesday morning to wrap up the Huskies final tournament of the fall. UW has finished no lower than eighth in four events so far this season and own one team title.
