KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – University of Washington senior Charlotte Thomas entered the final round of the Pac-12 Preview sitting atop the leaderboard and that's where she stayed finishing with a three-round score of 7-under 212 to earn her first title of the 2015-16 season and her third-career tourna-ment win as a Husky.
Thomas commanded the lead through all three rounds in the stacked field opening up the event with a 3-under 70. She improved upon that score during the second 18 holes of the day on Monday with her season-low round of 4-under 69. It was the first time during the fall season that Thomas posted back-to-back sub-par rounds. The senior closed out the tournament Tuesday with an even par 73 for her first tournament win since the 2013-14 season.
“I'm so happy for Charlotte and her win today,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “Her fall season didn't go exactly how she wanted it to so it was great seeing her play her game out there this week. Even when she shot a double on her third hole today, she was able to get back and finish at even par. It's a great confidence builder for her and will give her momentum to build upon when we start back up in the fall.”
She's the second Husky to win an individual title this season, joining Julianne Alvarez who picked up the crown at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational. Thomas closes out the fall campaign with four top 20 finishes and three top 10 efforts.
Freshman Wenyung Keh also earned her third top 10 finish of the season as she carded a 2-over 221 with rounds of 1-over 74, 1-under 72 and 2-over 75 to tie for 10th. Keh, who carded 10 birdies during the three rounds, has finished in the top two of the Huskies rotation in two of the last three tourna-ments.
“Wenyung was our most consistent player of the fall and this week was no different,” added Mulflur. “She was so steady and once again finished in the top 10. We know she has a really high-ceiling and we are looking forward to what she can do this spring.”
Also coming in with a top 25 finish was senior Ying Luo who tied for 24th with an 8-over 227. Luo fired a 1-over 74, a 6-over 79 and finished with a 1-over 74 to wrap up the fall season. Luo never finished low-er than 25th during the five fall tournaments for UW.
Rounding out the Dawg contingent was freshmen Julianne Alvarez who came in at 21-over 240 (77-85-78) for T-46th and Sarah Rhee who placed T-51st with a 24-over 243 (74-84-85).
The 15th-ranked Dawgs finished fifth overall with a 20-over 896, posting scores of 292, 304, 300 at the Nanea Golf Club. No. 6 UCLA won the team title outright with a 1-over 877 while No. 13 Arizona State came in second at 8-over 884.
“It wasn't necessarily the fall season that we wanted to have, but as one of the youngest teams in the country, we saw some really positive things that we can build upon during the next couple of months,” said Mulflur. “We have the talent and there's no question on the effort this group has been giving but we just need to be more consistent with our play and that will come with experience for our young squad.”
Washington wraps up the season with five top eight finishes and one team title and will now take some time off before swinging back into action in February to start the spring season.
