ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Women's Golf Team climbed up to 10th place on the second day of the prestigious ANNIKA Intercollegiate as it carded a 2-over 290, one stroke better than their round score for a two-day total of five-over 581. The final day of the 54-hole stroke play tournament at the par-72 Watson Course at Reunion Resort tees off Tuesday morning.
“I was really encouraged by our round today especially with the team's attitude out on the course,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “The scores weren't as good overall, but we only had four strokes between our lowest and highest score which is a good gap to have. Additionally, only six teams shot better than us as a whole, so overall, I was pleased with what I saw.”
Seniors Ying Luo and Charlotte Thomas led the Dawgs in round two as they sit tied for 23rd with two day scores of even-par 144. Luo carded a 1-under 71 which included two birdies to climb 11 spots on the leaderboard. Thomas fell three spots with her 1-over 73 after her round included two birdies and three bogeys. Both Luo and Thomas sit 10 strokes off leader Robynn Ree out of USC (10-under 134).
“Charlotte is just playing really steady right now and it was good to see Ying climb up the leaderboard with her 1-under round,” added Mulflur.
Freshman Wenyung Keh moved her two-round total to 2-over 146 after shooting a 2-over 72 on Monday, placing her tied for 36th. Fellow freshman Sarah Rhee climbed one spot after improving her score by one stroke to finish the day at 2-over 74 for a two-round score of 5-over 149.
Freshman Julianne Alvarez had the biggest improvement from round one out of anyone in the 60-player field as she trimmed eight-strokes off her day one score to shoot an even-par 72. She climbed six spots into a tie for 52nd. Alvarez posted two birdies in her first 12 holes before bogeying on two of her final six to finish at even par.
“It was great to see Julianne bounce back like she did today,” said Mulflur. “She calmed down a little and collected herself, which is a testament to her experience.”
USC continues to sit atop the leaderboard carding a 17-under 271 on Monday to put their two-round score at 29-under 547. Texas A&M jumped into second after posting a 2-under 268, moving their total to 12-under 564 while Arizona climbed three spots and sits at 9-under 567 after two days.
