Davis The First Of Three More Huskies Drafted
June 10, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE - Two current Husky Baseball players and one future Dawg were drafted on Wednesday in the final day of the MLB Draft to bring the total to four current and three future Huskies selected in the three-day draft.
Senior pitcher Tyler Davis was the first Husky to hear his name called on the final day of the draft. He was selected in the 23rd round, 678th overall by the Texas Rangers.
Davis ended his UW career as one of the most decorated pitchers in team history, leaving the school as the all-time leader in innings pitched (358 2/3), second in starts (50) and fourth in wins (23), strikeouts (247) and appearances (76).
In 2015 Davis earned his second-consecutive All-Pac-12 nod after posting an 8-6 record with a 3.20 ERA in 15 starts. He is just the third UW pitcher to earn All-Conference recognition twice in their career. Davis, from Archbishop Mitty HS and Mountain View, Calif., was also named the Pac-12 Baseball Scholar Athlete of the Year at the conclusion of the season.
He ranked third in the Conference with 112 2/3 innings pitched and 93 strikeouts. His 93 strikeouts were the ninth most in UW single-season history and he is also just the second Husky to reach 100 innings in a season twice during their career (Tim Lincecum was the other in 2004, '05 and '06).
Davis was an All-American in 2014 after he was 11-2 with a 1.60 ERA. He also was a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist and Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year finalist.
Incoming freshman A.J. Graffanino out of Northwest Christian School in Peoria, Ariz. was the next player with Husky ties selected. He was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the 26th round, 784th overall.
The shortstop recently led his high school to the Arizona Division III title and is the son of former Major League infielder Tony Graffanino.
Later, in the 36th round, junior pitcher Troy Rallings was picked by the Oakland A's with the 1,088th overall pick. Rallings was honorable mention All-Pac-12 after going 3-4 with a 2.01 ERA in 71.2 innings and team-best six saves and 0.98 WHIP. He ranked third in the conference with a 2.01 ERA, 6th in games finished (21) and opposing batting average (.217).
Rallings finished the season especially strong with a string of 9 2/3 innings of perfect baseball over his final five games. Besides not allowing a baserunner of any kind, he struck out 10 and picked up four saves.
