CSUN Blanks UW, 6-0
May 16, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE – CSUN scored three times in the first inning to back up a four-hit shutout by starter Jerry Keel as the Matadors clinched the series over the Huskies with a 6-0 win at Husky Ballpark Saturday.
Keel struck out eight and did not walk a batter. No Husky baserunner reached third until the ninth inning with two outs.
The loss was the seventh in the last eight games at home for Washington (26-24).
The Matadors (31-22) roughed up Husky All-American Tyler Davis early and played add on later. Davis, making his 49th career start – tying Jeff Carlsen for second most in UW history, gave up a career-high 11 hits and career-high tying six runs, five earned.
Davis spotted CSUN three runs in the first inning, and although he eventually steadied the ship and lasted eight innings, it proved to be too late. Chester Pak had a two-run double and Justin Toerner knocked in another run with a two-out double to give the Matadors a 3-0 lead before Washington even stepped up to the plate.
The Matadors added to their lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Toerner and scored another run in the sixth on a solo homer by Nolan Bumstead to make it 5-0.
Toerner tacked on another sacrifice fly in the eighth for his third RBI of the game.
Meanwhile, the Husky offense could never solve the senior left-hander, Keel. The Huskies never had two men on base in the same inning, and had runners in scoring position in just three innings.
Braden Bishop had two of Washington's four hits, including a double. Nyles Nygaard and Levi Jordan had the other hits for the Huskies.
Ryan Raslowsky was 3 for 5 to lead the Matadors' 12-hit attack.
The teams wrap up the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
