Playing 4MOM, UW Wins Game, Series Against Arizona
May 11, 2015 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. – In a game in which both Washington and Arizona players honored their mothers with 4MOM written on their arms, the Huskies beat the Wildcats 3-2 Sunday evening at Hi Corbett Field.
It was the Huskies (26-22, 11-16 Pac-12) first one-run victory in Pac-12 play in 11 tries and gave UW a 2-1 series victory over Arizona (28-20, 12-15).
Junior Braden Bishop started writing 4MOM on his left arm and shoes to raise awareness for early onset Alzheimer's Disease, which his mom, Suzy, was diagnosed with in September. Bishop teamed with Arizona star Scott Kingery to rally both teams to play 4MOM on Mother's Day.
An inspired Bishop played a great game for the Huskies, going 2 for 4 at the plate, doubling, scoring twice and stealing a base. After the game an emotionally spent Bishop expressed gratitude towards both his teammates and the opposition for rallying around his cause.
“With everything I did on the field today, I thought about her,” he said. “I'm doing it for her, for mom. It was definitely emotional.
“It was so much more than I thought it would be. I was taken aback by everyone writing 4MOM on their arms and helping me raise awareness. It definitely meant a lot to me.”
On the field, Washington jumped ahead of Arizona in the third on a two-run homer by Austin Rei. Rei took a 2-1 pitch from Arizona starter Bobby Dalbec (2-6) off the scoreboard above the left field wall for his sixth homer of the year.
Bishop, who singled to lead off the inning, scored ahead of Rei's blast.
The Huskies added to their lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Alex Schmidt that scored Bishop to make the score 3-0, but Arizona had an answer in the bottom half of the inning.
Kevin Newman drove in one run with a ground out and Dalbec helped his own cause on the mound with a two-out RBI single.
Both runs were charged to Washington starter Josh Fredendall. He went 4 1/3 innings, giving up six hits to go along with two walks and the two runs.
That would be all the scoring for both teams though, thanks to solid pitching and defense from both sides.
Spencer Jones (4-6) pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing three hits, walking one and striking out two to pick up the win.
Troy Rallings pitched out of a jam in the eighth for the final out of the inning and set down the Wildcats in order in the ninth for his second save in two nights – his fourth overall of the year.
First baseman Branden Berry had several game-saving picks and scoops that kept Arizona off the scoreboard.
Dalbec pitched a complete game and struck out a career high 10, but took the loss for Arizona.
The Huskies top of the order – Bishop, Jack Meggs (2 for 4) and Austin Rei (1 for 4, HR) – combined to go 5 for 12 with all 3 runs and 2 RBI.
Washington returns home to play Cal-State Northridge for a three-game, non-conference series this weekend.
