April 25, 2015 | Track & Field
SEATTLE - For a second straight day at the Drake Relays, the Husky women earned a second-place finish, this time in the 4x800-meter relay. A few Huskies also opened up their weekends at the Triton Invitational in San Diego.
At Drake Stadium, Washington rolled out the team of Rose Christen, Eleanor Fulton, Anna Maxwell, and Baylee Mires, alternating between freshmen and upperclassmen. Fulton and Mires were doubling back from helping the 4x1600m relay take second last night. Mires got the baton in fourth-place, and closed in 2:05.68 to get the Huskies up to second-place in a time of 8:36.59, edging out teams from Ohio State, Arkansas, and Illinois. Oklahoma State got the win by nearly nine seconds.
The men's 4x800-meter relay was up next, with the Huskies going with Nick Harris, Drew Schreiber, Kyle Blume, and Andrew Prentice. Harris got the Dawgs off to a strong start, with one of the top splits on the opening leg, as he ran 1:52.76. Schreiber and Blume proceeded to run 1:54's and Prentice anchored in 1:53.67 to bring the Huskies to the line in ninth-place, in 7:35.30.
Washington will run the two DMRs on Saturday to wrap up their Drake stay.
The hammer and discus throws were held today at the Triton Invite, hosted by UC San Diego. Freshman Onyie Chibuogwu was first up in the hammer, and she improved her season-best to 156-feet, 10-inches on her third and final attempt, and moves to No. 8 on the Husky top-10. Fellow freshman Lyndsay Leatherman had a big PR in the discus, throwing 153-2, and Chibuogwu also went 134-2 for her second PR of the day.
Most of the Husky pole vaulters are entered in the invitational sections on Saturday in San Diego, but Kaitlin Zinsli went in the open section and soared to a new PR of 12-7 1/2, which won the event out of thirty entries.
