Top-Three Runs At Drake, Owsinski Soars In S.D.
April 26, 2015 | Track & Field
SEATTLE - The Huskies wrapped up their three-day run at the Drake Relays with a third runner-up finish, this one from the men's distance medley relay, while the Husky women took third overall. Meanwhile down in San Diego at the Triton Invite, junior Kristina Owsinski soared to a new PR in the pole vault, going over 14-2 1/2 to move to No. 2 in school history.
At the prestigious Drake Relays, the Dawgs sent out a DMR of Meron Simon, Andrew Prentice, Nick Harris, and Izaic Yorks. Simon split 3:00.68 on the opening 1200-meters to get the Dawgs in the mix. After a 48.37 split from Prentice for 400m and a 1:53.67 mark from Harris on the 800m, Yorks went to work, picking off teams on the final 1600-meters. His 4:00.39 split was the fastest out of the 15 anchor legs by more than three seconds, and he carried the Dawgs up to second, finishing just two-tenths behind Oklahoma State, which won in 9:42.91 with the Huskies at 9:43.11, finishing ahead of Air Force, Minnesota, and Illinois to round out the top-five.
The women then followed up in the DMR, an event they placed fifth in at the NCAA Indoor Championships, though anchor Maddie Meyers was the lone holdover today from that group. Today, sophomore Katie Knight led off, followed by freshmen Rose Christen and Anna Maxwell, and on to Meyers. Knight led off with a 3:29.14 1200-meter leg and Christen ran 56.46 for 400-meters. Meyers had the second-fastest anchor leg out of the bunch, going 4:38.36 to bring the Dawgs home in third-place in 11:17.54.
Also at Drake today, Andrew Gardner ran his second career steeplechase, finishing 13th in a time of 9:15.38.
Out on the West Coast at UC San Diego, Washington's day was cut short and for several athletes never got started, as the meet ran behind schedule, and the Huskies had to leave to make their flight back to Seattle before some of their events were finished.
One athlete who did get a full meet was Owsinski, who led the way with her third 14-foot clearance in her past six outings. Today was her best clearance yet, as she went over 14-2 1/2, to overtake Kate Soma for the No. 2 spot in school history. Only Logan Miller has gone higher outdoors, setting the record of 14-4 1/2 in 2012. Diamara Planell Cruz and Elizabeth Quick also jumped, but went out after making 13-2 1/2.
In the men's javelin at the Triton Invite, Curtis Clauson had his second competition of the season, throwing 202-5. Freshman Denham Patricelli also tossed 197-1. On the women's side, sophomore Ashley Alexander led the way with a throw of 139-feet and freshman Lyndsay Leatherman threw 128-5.
Sophomore Dan Boyden had a shot put best of 50-7 1/2, and in the women's long jump Kennadi Bouyer went 18-5 on her second attempt but she did not get to make her three finals attempts due to the time crunch.
Four Husky men's vaulters were scheduled to compete, but only J.J. Juilfs got one attempt in, a make at 15-1, before UW had to leave.
