Huskies Rally For 4-3 Win Over Seattle U
April 22, 2015 | Baseball
BELLEVUE, Wash. – The Huskies scored three times in the sixth and tacked on another run in the seventh to rally for a 4-3 victory over Seattle U at rainy Bannerwood Park Tuesday night.
The Redhawks outhit the Huskies 9-6, but they stranded 11 runners on base and committed four costly errors on the evening.
The win was the third in three tries this year for the Huskies (22-16) over the Redhawks (21-19).
Seattle U got on the board first, jumping on Huskies' starter Josh Fredendall for a run in the second. After second baseman Sheldon Stober singled and stole second, Redhawks' designated hitter Sean Sutton doubled the opposite way down the left-field line to score Stober.
The Redhawks doubled their lead in the fourth scoring an unearned run to make it 2-0. Brian Olson reached second on a two-base fielding error at third by Alex Schmidt and came around to score on a single by Brian Carpenter.
Washington finally got on the board and took the lead in the sixth thanks to a pair of errors, walks and wild pitches by the Redhawks.
Braden Bishop and Chris Baker led off with back-to-back singles, which ended up being the only hits of the innings. With one out and Branden Berry up to bat, Seattle U pitcher Chris Carns (2-2) unleashed consecutive wild pitches, the second one allowing Bishop to score. The catcher Olson compounded the problem when he tried to throw Bishop out at the plate, but instead threw it past the pitcher covering home, allowing Baker to also come around and tie the score at 2-2.
Berry eventually walked and Schmidt followed with a walk of his own to put two runners on. Josh Cushing proceeded to hit into what looked like an inning-ending double play, but first baseman Grant Newton missed the relay throw from second, allowing Berry to come around to score and give the UW its first lead.
With the 3-2 advantage, Fredendall turned the game over to the Huskies' bullpen. The senior scattered four hits and allowed two runs - only one earned - and struck out five in five innings.
The Huskies padded their lead in the seventh without the benefit of a hit. Back-to-back Redhawks' errors, followed by a walk to Austin Rei loaded the bases for Berry. Berry walked on four pitches to force in the fourth run of the game for the Huskies.
Seattle U cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run in the eighth, charged to Spencer Jones, but that would be all that the Redhawks could muster offensively the rest of the way.
Brandon Choate shut down the Redhawks perserving the win for Fredendall (3-0), but not before some tense moments. Seattle U got the tying run on base in the form of Dalton Hurd, who entered the game 13 for 13 in stolen bases. But, Hurd was erased trying to steal second by a perfect throw from catcher Joey Mogan in a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play. Choate then got Jack Reisinger to foul out to end the game and earn his third save of the season.
Six different Huskies accounted for the team's six hits – all singles. Bishop was 1 for 4 with 2 runs and a stolen base. Morgan was 1 for 4 extending his career-high hit streak to seven games.
Berry was 0 for 3, ending a career-high 16-game hit streak.
UW resumes Pac-12 play Friday through Sunday against Oregon at PK Park in Eugene, Ore. All three games will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT.
