Huskies Fall, 6-4, In 10 Innings To UND
February 28, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE – North Dakota's Ryan Reese hit a three-run home run in the 10th inning to give his team a 6-4 win over Washington at Husky Ballpark Friday.
Reese took a 1-2 pitch from Spencer Jones and drove it into the night sky to break a 3-3 tie. Tyler Follis, who walked, and Jeff Campbell, who singled for his third hit of the game, scored in front of Reese.
The three runs were the first of the season given up by Jones (1-1) in five appearances.
The Huskies got a run back in the 10th on Braden Bishop's first career home run, but it was too little too late. It was Bishop's third hit of the game, but Campbell (1-0) retired the next three batters to pick up the first win of the season for North Dakota (1-3).
The Huskies dropped to 6-4 on the season.
The game got off to an ominous start for the Huskies when North Dakota lead-off hitter Dalton Parrott greeted UW starter Troy Rallings rudely with a home run to left field to give his team the early 1-0 advantage. Parrott, who came into the game starting the season 0 for 9 at the plate, blasted Rallings' 1-1 offering safely over the head of a chasing Kyle London.
Rallings would settle down from there, striking out six of the next nine batters. But, the junior from Carlsbad, Calif. ran into trouble in the fourth inning. He loaded the bases with no one out, but escaped allowing just one run and trailing 2-0 after getting a 6-4-3 double play and fly out.
Washington finally got to UND starter Andrew Thome in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half. The Huskies mounted a two-out rally on three-consecutive hits by Branden Berry, Will Sparks and Chris Baker. Baker's seeing-eye single between short and third was good enough to score Berry from second and make it 2-1.
The Huskies drew even in the sixth to make it a new ballgame. Bishop led off with a bloop double to center and advanced to third on a ground out by Alex Schmidt. Berry sent Bishop home on a sacrifice fly to center to tie the score at 2-2.
UND re-took the lead in the seventh, scoring an unearned run on an improbable two-base sacrifice fly. Sam Alt reached on an error to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second. Number eight hitter Brett Harrison followed with a fly ball that right fielder Jack Meggs caught while diving to his right. As Meggs got up, he lost the ball while transferring it to his throwing hand. Alt never slowed down and scored when catcher Joey Morgan could not handle the bouncing throw home from Meggs.
After giving up a two-out double, Rallings left the game. He ended up with a career-high nine strikeouts in a career-high 6 2/3 innings. He gave up just four hits and only two of the three runs he allowed were earned.
The Husky offense took Rallings off the hook in the eighth inning, tying the game up at 3-3. Bishop led off with a hit to center, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to pinch-hitter Nyles Nygaard, Berry hit his second sacrifice fly of the game to pick up his team-high eighth RBI of the season.
Washington had a chance to win the game in the ninth, but with runners on second and third and two outs, Campbell got Meggs to foul out to third.
The Huskies outhit North Dakota 8-7, but also stranded eight runners.
Bishop ended up 3 for 4 at the plate with three runs and a stolen base. Will Sparks contributed two hits for the Huskies.
The Huskies continue their four-game series against North Dakota tomorrow with a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT. The Huskies will send right-hander Tyler Davis (1-1, 4.85) to the hill in game one and righty Josh Fredendall (1-0, 3.27) in game two.
