Huskies Fall 10-1 To Oklahoma In Pac-12/Big-12 Tourney
February 20, 2015 | Baseball
MESA, Ariz. – Oklahoma scored four times in the fourth inning to open up what had been a pitcher's duel and beat Washington 10-1 in Friday's second game of the Pac-12/Big-12 Tournament at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz.
Husky starter Tyler Davis was cruising along through three innings when two errors proved to be the catalyst for the big inning for the Sooners. After No. 3 hitter Sheldon Neuse walked to leadoff, Anthoney Hermelyn chopped a grounder that shortstop Chris Baker mishandled. Second baseman Levi Jordan picked up the ball and compounded the initial error by throwing the ball wildly to first allowing the runners to both move into scoring position.
Hunter Haley hit a sacrifice fly to score Neuse, and after a single, Kolbey Carpenter delivered the big blow with a three-run home run to left field. It was the first home run that Davis has allowed in two seasons, the last one coming on April 13, 2013.
Oklahoma (4-4) added two more runs on a two-out, two-run single by No. 9 hitter Joshua Ake in the sixth to make it 6-0. Ake was thrown out trying to advance, but he ultimately was the last batter Davis (1-1) would face.
The Washington senior All-American gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits, walked two batters and struck out three.
His counterpart Jake Elliott (2-0) went seven strong innings, giving up just three hits, walking one and striking out seven Husky hitters. The only run he gave up was a home run to left field by junior first baseman Branden Berry in the seventh inning.
It was Berry's first home run of the season, the fourth of his UW career.
The Sooners tacked on four more runs in the eighth inning despite only having one hit to make the final score 10-1. Oklahoma benefitted from four walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches by UW pitchers.
Oklahoma outhit Washington 8-4 in dropping the Huskies to a 4-2 record on the season. The Huskies had four different batters each record a hit.
The Huskies play game three of the Pac-12/Big-12 Tournament tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m PT first pitch against Kansas State again at Sloan Park, the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs. The Huskies will send Joshua Fredendall (1-0, 0.00) to the hill against right-hander Colton Kalmus (0-0, 0.00).
