Husky Hopefuls Put On A Show During Scout Day
October 17, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE - On the eve of a huge football game between Washington and Oregon, the UW Baseball team was busy at work, steps away from the bustle of Husky Stadium. With the sun beating down on Husky Ballpark and temperatures reaching the 70's, the baseball team held Scout Day in front of 30-plus professional scouts. And all indications are that the group made a lasting impression on the gathering.
“Scout day is always an interesting day for us,” said Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs. “Part of coming to this place is dreaming of playing professional baseball, so we want our guys to have that opportunity to show off their skills and show people they can play and not be limited to the practice routine.”
The team treated the afternoon like a game day, but threw in some bonus drills that allowed scouts to measure the skills of the Huskies. A majority of the fielders started the day by running 60-yard dashes for the gathering. The Dawgs showed that the team will have some serious flyers this upcoming season and undoubtedly left an impression on the group assembled.
From there, it became game mode for the Huskies. They did infield and outfield drills, followed by batting practice. The day culminated in a nine-inning game.
Ten Husky pitchers eligible for the draft took the hill over the nine innings. Score was not kept, but all the pitchers had strong outings. The defense was also very stout behind the staff, making some spectacular plays while also executing the routine plays.
The offense was solid too. Junior Jack Meggs and freshman Karl Kani each showed their wheels with hustle triples. Baserunners made solid decisions on the paths. All in all, it was a good day for the Huskies, said Meggs.
“You hope your guys can come out and battle some nerves, take good swings, and air it out on the mound and run the bases, and that's what I think we did,” he said. “We showed some people that we have guys with some athletic ability, so we'll see those scouts again.”
The Huskies continue practice next week and will culminate fall ball with the Purple and Gold World Series. The team will play four games at Husky Ballpark, with the first game on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. The P&G World Series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. and concludes with a pair of games on Monday, Oct. 26 and Tuesday, Oct. 27 with both games starting at 2:30 p.m.
