UW Falls To ASU 2-1, Suffers First Home Loss
October 16, 2015 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – A penalty kick in the fifth minute of double overtime gave ASU a 2-1 win over UW, as the Huskies suffered their first home loss of the season on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Field.
“This game didn't have a ton of rhythm to it,” UW head coach Lesle Gallimore said. “ASU was very good going forward and clearing long balls, so it was really difficult for us to really play at our pace. We weren't extra dangerous in front of the goal. If you let a team that potent hang around, eventually they'll take advantage of a chance. It was a poor goal to give up. We just have to take a deep breath and move forward to our next game against Cal.”
The Sun Devils (5-7-1, 1-4-1 Pac-12) opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Jessica Raybe received a pass from Madison Kmetko on the left side of the box. In space, Raybe lobbed a shot over the defense and into the right corner of the net, giving ASU a 1-0 advantage.
Washington (10-3-2, 3-2-1 Pac-12) responded by controlling possession for the rest of the half, outshooting ASU 8-3 in the first frame. The Huskies tied the game in the 45th minute, just seven seconds before halftime, as freshman Pascale Dumesnil fought off two defenders and lofted a shot from 35 yards out that was just out of reach of ASU goalkeeper Morris Chandler. It was Dumesnil's first-career goal and she became the 10th Husky to score a goal this season.
ASU came out firing in the second half, outshooting the Huskies 8-2, but neither team could find the back of the net as the game went to over time.
The Huskies controlled the run of play in the first overtime, forcing Chandler into two saves, while ASU didn't manage a shot.
In the 105th minute, Raybe got on the end of a long ball and touched it past diving UW goalkeeper Megan Kufeld, who got a piece of Raybe to earn a red card and give ASU a penalty kick. Whitney Kanavel took the penalty kick and slotted it into the left corner just out of the diving reach of UW sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Shimer who took Kufeld's place. The golden goal gave ASU the 2-1 win.
The Huskies return to action against Cal on Friday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. PT at Husky Soccer Field followed by a visit from Stanford on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. Both game will be shown on the Pac-12 Network.
