No. 18 Huskies Return Home To Host ASU
October 14, 2015 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Riding a four-game unbeaten streak, No. 18 UW women's soccer will begin a three-game home stand against Arizona State on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Husky Soccer Field.
“We're excited to be back at home,” UW head coach Lesle Gallimore said. “We've enjoyed playing here and it should be a great night of soccer. We're happy to have a one-game week after a grueling weekend. We're excited and ready to come out flying on Thursday.”
The Huskies (10-2-2, 3-1-1 Pac-12) are undefeated at home this year, with a perfect 6-0-0 record. The Dawgs have won three of their last four games, including wins over UCLA and USC at home and a 2-0 win at Utah in their most recent outing. The Huskies also tied at Colorado in that stretch to extend the unbeaten streak to four games since dropping their conference opener at Arizona.
Sophomore midfielder Shannon Simon leads the Huskies with six goals, four assists and 49 shots. Junior midfielder and team captain Amanda Perez has contributed four goals and two assists, including a beautiful assist on freshman forward Kelcie Hedge's third goal of the season, the potential game-winner against Utah. Hedge also has two assists. Sophomore forward Kimberly Keever has four goals on the season. Sophomore forward Rachel Wheeler has two goals and three assists.
Dominique Bond-Flasza, Havana McElvaine, McKenzie Karas and Sam Kokoska each have one goal apiece. Karas scored the second goal of the game against Utah, giving the Huskies nine goal scorers this season.
Senior goalkeeper and team captain Megan Kufeld has recorded five shutouts this season with a back line led by Karas and fellow senior center back Allyson Brahs.
ASU (4-7-1, 0-4-1) enters Thursday's match holding an eight game winless streak, but are coming off a 1-1 draw at UCLA. Cali Farquharson leads ASU with five goals and four assists, and Aly Moon has chipped in four goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Chandler Morris has four shutouts on the season.
“They're a good team,” Gallimore said. “Their record is not indicative of how good they are, as they've had the misfortune of injuries. You can't rest on them. They're tough to keep out of the back of the net. We'll have to have a great defensive effort and stick to our style on the attack.”
The two sides have now faced off 18 times, with the Huskies holding a 9-5-4 advantage. Last season, the Huskies battled back from a one-goal deficit to beat the Sun Devils 2-1 in Seattle.
The Huskies will honor 2015 World Cup Champion and Golden Glove award-winner Hope Solo at halftime. Solo and Gallimore will also be honored for their recent inclusion on the Pac-12 All-Century team.
Thursday's match will kick off at 7 p.m. PT and will be shown on the Pac-12 Network. In-game updates will also be provided on Twitter at @UW_WSoccer.
