Huskies Battle To 1-1 Draw At Colorado
October 10, 2015 | Women's Soccer
BOULDER – UW women's soccer fought its way to a 1-1 tie behind Kimby Keever's fourth goal of the season and Megan Kufeld's eight saves.
“This was a good challenge,” UW head coach Lesle Gallimore said. “We knew Colorado was going to come out here hungry and we didn't play our best for a large chunk of that game. With that said, on the road, to earn a draw in the Pac-12 isn't a terrible result.”
UW vs. Colorado Highlights
The Huskies (9-2-2, 2-1-1 Pac-12) became just the second team this season to get out of Boulder without a loss, as the Buffaloes (7-4-2, 1-2-1 Pac-12) are now 6-1-1 at home in 2015.
Keever scored her fourth of the year in the 11th minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Shannon Simon crossed a ball from outside the box, and sophomore forward Rachel Wheeler worked hard to get a head on the cross between two converging Buffaloes. Her header found Keever alone in front of the goal, where she volleyed the ball into the back of the net.
Simon and Wheeler were each credited with assists on the play. Simon now leads the team with four assists on the season. Keever is now tied for second on the team with four goals.
After the Huskies took the lead, Colorado took control of the game and ended the first half with a 7-4 shot advantage despite the 1-0 deficit. Colorado continued attacking into the second half, putting up a 11 shots to total 18 in regulation to force Kufeld into a busy night.
“We didn't play well the rest of the first half,” Gallimore said. “We didn't possess well and we didn't really play smart. Colorado is good going forward and started limiting our possession, and we didn't stay patient.”
With UW leading 1-0, Colorado earned a corner kick in the 58th minute. Joss Orejel took the corner and her cross found Heather Ward, who headed home her first goal of the season to tie the game at one.
The run of play evened out after the Colorado goal, with both teams playing with a sense of urgency. The Huskies held the advantage throughout the last few minutes of regulation and overtime, outshooting Colorado 5-2 in the overtime periods and earning multiple chances.
“Towards the end of regulation, we started coming on a little bit,” Gallimore said. “In the overtimes, we really had the better of the chances. Kelcie (Hedge) worked really hard to get herself a couple of looks and Rachel (Wheeler) on the breakaway – that was a great look. We had a couple shots to put that game away.”
The Huskies conclude their road trip at Utah on Sunday, Oct. 11, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. PT, 2 p.m. MT. Sunday's game will be shown on the Pac-12 Networks. In-game updates will also be provided on Twitter at @UW_WSoccer.
