Huskies Improve to 4-0 with Victory over Hawai?i
January 30, 2015 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE - With a 7-0 defeat over the Hawai'I Rainbow Warriors, the No. 63 University of Washington Huskies have won their fourth straight match, their best start to a season since 2011.
The victory proved to be more difficult for the Huskies than the score might indicate with several close matches and sets. The afternoon started with a hard-earned doubles point for Washington that was won by Gal Hakak and Viktor Farkas 7-5, despite No. 39 ranked team of Egger and Hawke getting beat 4-6 moments later.
“We got the point and I'm happy that Vik and Gal were going,” said head coach Matt Anger. “But I really wanted Jeff and Emmett to get that set there. I thought they'd been doing pretty well. The point they lost it was a 4-5 deuce, you get it and it's even. It was a wild point, and the ball landed on the back of the line.”
The Huskies managed to seal the victory early in singles play with three dominant two-set victories. Joao Barra went 6-0, 6-2 at court six, Gal Hakak went 6-0, 6-4 at court three, and Viktor Farkas went 6-4, 6-4 at court 5 and did not lose a single point on his serve in his first set.
The other finishes weren't as easy for Washington, with Emmett Egger at court one and Mitch Stewart at court two both going into a tiebreaker for their first sets. Emmett won his tiebreaker and cruised through the second set for a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Hawai'I's Nils Schuhmann.
“I thought Emmett started alright but wasn't really into the return game from the beginning. He was down 5-3 and was able to break back, and I thought he got some momentum there,” said Anger. “Then in the tiebreaker he got up and didn't finish it off. So then we were six-all. But we got the point, played a good return point, and all the sudden it was ours. There were a lot of good things in that set.”
Stewart lost his tiebreaker and, along with Jake Douglas at court four, was forced to a third tiebreaker set, from which both Stewart and Douglas emerged victorious by a 10-6 score.
“We've got a lot to work on. On Sunday, we looked like a well-oiled machine there for the third match of the year. And today, the oil was running dry a little bit. It wasn't as smooth, and that's to be expected,” concluded Anger.
Well-oiled or not, the Huskies have given themselves a chance to start the season 5-0 with a matchup vs. the Eastern Washington University Eagles at the Nordstrom Tennis Center this Saturday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m.
