Dawgs Extend Their Winning Streak to 5, in 7-0 win
February 01, 2015 | Men's Tennis
Although it was a tough battle, the Dawgs started off the match strong, winning the doubles point. Rish Raman and Wendell Watanabe won handily, giving the Huskies the advantage early, but newcomers Joao Barra and Jake Douglas dropped their match 4-6 leaving it point up to whoever took court one doubles. Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke, ranked 39th nationally, had a back-and-fourth match, but secured the doubles victory for the Huskies with a 7-5 decision.
“I thought all the way through in singles and doubles, we were pretty spirited,” said head coach Matt Anger. “We were just the way we were in practice yesterday. Double point was close, but I thought it was high level doubles. In singles the guys did a really good job. They concentrated well.”
“I think the elements of the game and our future is good. We conserve, we can return, and we can hit volleys. The part in-between where you have to move and know where to move. Those trained instincts are where we are behind, but we will get better” added Anger.
The Dawgs swept all six singles matches. Viktor Farkas was the first to finish, easily posting a 6-0, 6-1 decision. Rish Raman and Jeff Hawke won shortly after, where they finished 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively.
Jake Douglas had the match to watch, forcing his opponent into three sets. After almost two hours of singles play, Douglas finished the match with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 decision.
“[Jake] has done a great job. I was glad he pulled out the third set. I would say he has played five bad games this whole year. That's pretty good.”
Up next for UW, the Dawgs head down to Austin, Texas on Feb. 6, where they face the University of Texas at 6 p.m.
