
Dawgs Finish Fourth At Husky Invitational

BREMERTON, Wash. – Washington men's golf charged up the leaderboard on Tuesday, finishing fourth at the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain's Olympic Course. The Dawgs had the best round of the day at 2-under 286 to leap two teams in the standings.
Oregon and UCLA tied for the tournament title, finishing at 3-over 867. San Diego State finished third at 9-over, just one stroke ahead of the Huskies at 10-over 874. UC Davis rounded out the top five, finishing two shots back of UW at 12-over.
Jake Knapp of UCLA won the individual title at 7-under, birdying the final hole to get UCLA into the first-place tie as a team. Xander Schauffele of San Diego State was the runner-up at 4-under, while three players tied for third.
Washington was led by junior Jonathan Sanders who finished with a round of 1-under 71 and place tied for sixth. He was even par for the week with rounds of 69, 76 and 71. Sanders made six birdies on Tuesday, closing well at 3-under over his final nine holes.
Also with a top-20 finish for the Huskies was Kevin Kwon who finished tied for 17th after a final round of even-par 72. Kwon finished at 5-over for the tournament, responding from an opening-round 79.
The Huskies best finish on Friday came from freshman Jordan Lu. The Vancouver, B.C., native shot the best round of his young collegiate career, firing a 3-under 69 to climb into a tie for 27th at 7-over for the tournament.
Completing the Husky final round scoring was another freshman, Frank Garber. Garber shot a 2-over 74 to finish tied for 42nd at 10-over.
After a solid first day, Chris Babcock struggled to a 7-over 79 on Tuesday. The junior placed tied for 35th at 9-over after back-to-back 73's to open the tournament.
Over on the Cascade Course, Corey Pereira led the Huskies, taking second place in the Husky Individual. Leading after the first day, Pereira could not keep up his torrid pace, but still finished at 5-under, two shots off the lead of Manav Shah of UCLA.
The hottest player on the Cascade course was freshman Greg Gildea who fired a round of 2-under 69. After opening with an 84 in his first collegiate round, Gildea settled in nicely and climbed to a tie for 28th at 12-under.
Tyler Salsbury placed tied for 30th at 13-over and Spencer Weiss 39th at 22-over to complete the Husky individuals.
The Dawgs will be back in action next week when the head over the Cascades to compete in the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate, hosted by Washington State at Palouse Ridge. The tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday, Sept. 29, followed by an 18-hole final round of Tuesday, Sept. 30.
