BREMERTON, Wash. – Washington men's golf opened the 2014-15 season on Monday with 36 holes at the Husky Invitational. Playing in tough scoring conditions at Gold Mountain's Olympic Course, the Dawgs finished sixth after two rounds with a final round to be contested Tuesday.
Washington is at 12-over 588 after rounds of 5-over and 7-over on the day. UW trails UCLA who is the 36-hole leader even-par for the tournament. San Diego State, UC Davis, Oregon and New Mexico round out the top five in tightly contested bunch of front that are separated by just six strokes.
The Dawgs were tied for third after the first round and briefly held the lead after a hot start to the second round. The quality play didn't last late in the evening, however, as the Dawgs were one of the last teams on the course, battling darkness.
Jonathan Sanders led the Huskies, taking the individual lead after the first round as he was the only player in the 60's in the morning. His 3-under 69 was a great start, but a 4-over 76 in the afternoon dropped him back into a tie for 11th at 1-over for the tournament. Still, Sanders is just seven back of the lead set by Jake Knapp of UCLA.
Also playing well of the Huskies was junior Chris Babcock who is just one behind Sanders at 2-over for the tournament and tied for 19th. Babcock shot matching rounds of 1-over 73's, playing in the No. 1 spot for the first time.
The top round in the afternoon went to Kevin Kwon, firing a round of 2-under 70. Kwon had his round of 7-over 79 thrown out in the morning, but he came back strong with the only afternoon round under par for the Huskies. He is tied for 34th after 36 holes
Finally, a pair of freshmen made their collegiate debuts. Frank Garber sits in a tie for 34th place at 8-over, while Jordan Lu is in a tie for 56th at 10-over.
Simultaneous to the Invitational on the Olympic Course, four Huskies also played in the Husky Individual on the Cascade Course at Gold Mountain. Sophomore Corey Pereira didn't let the disappointment of not qualifying for the Invitational get to him as he is dominating the Individual at 9-under with a three-stroke lead. Pereira made 13 birdies on the day for rounds of 4-under 67 and 5-under 66.
Also in the field are Tyler Salsbury who is currently 30th at 9-over, along with another pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts. Greg Gildea is tied for 35th at 14-over, while Spencer Weiss is tied for 38th at 17-over.
The Dawgs will return to Gold Mountain on Tuesday for the conlusion of both tournaments. As a team, the Huskies will look to climb the leaderboard in the Invitational, while Pereira looks to hold on for a win the individual event.
