PALO ALTO, Calif. - After a hardfought battle, UW women's soccer saw its season end Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Stanford in the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the Huskies' 13th NCAA Tournament appearance and fourth run to the Sweet Sixteen.
The Huskies played with energy throughout the game and created chances, but weren't able to get an equalizer after the Cardinal scored on a penalty kick in late in the first half.
The first half saw the Cardinal outshoot the Huskies 13-2, but the UW back line played very effectivley in limiting Stanford's dangerous chances. Kufeld made five saves to keep the game scoreless until the 43rd minute, when a Stanford forward was pulled down in the box and the Cardinal were awarded a penalty kick. Lo'eau LaBonta took the penalty, and Kufeld made the initial save. The ball bounced in front of the goal and LaBonta charged and scored the rebound to give Stanford a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies had chances late in the second half, including one in the final 30 seconds with two forwards charging after a bouncing ball toward Stanford goalie Jane Campbell. The Cardinal keeper scooped up the ball just in time to end the threat.
With the loss, the Huskies finish their season 14-7-2 after a fifth-place finish in the Pac-12. The 14 wins are the most for UW since 2008.
The Cardinal (20-1-2) advance to the Elite Eight next Friday, Nov. 30. Stanford will host Florida for a spot in the Final Four.
