PALO ALTO, Calif. – UW women's soccer fell to the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal 4-1 Friday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
The Huskies (7-4-0, 0-2-0 Pac-12) continue having trouble with the Cardinal, having beaten Stanford just twice all-time. The Cardinal (9-0-1, 1-0-1 Pac-12) picked up their first Pac-12 win of the season and remain unbeaten in 2014.
Ryan Walker-Hartshorn recorded her second hat trick of the season to lead the scoring barrage for the Cardinal. Kimby Keever scored her fifth of the season as the Huskies became just the second team to score against the Stanford defense.
Walker-Hartshorn broke the scoreless tie in the 25th minute. Stanford had controlled the ball and pressured the Dawgs from the onset. Walker-Hartshorn took a pass from Chioma Ubogagu from the right and took a shot in the middle of the box that deflected off a UW defender and into the right corner of the net.
Keever scored just 23 seconds later to equalize and breathe life back into the UW attack. Keever challenged a Stanford defender and keeper Jane Campbell, who were both converging on a ball to attempt a clearance. Keever jarred the ball loose and was alone behind the defense and scored on an empty net.
Stanford's response came just three minutes later, as Walker-Hartshorn was free in the box and ripped a wide open shot from the left across the goal and inside the right upright. The two first-half goals for Walker-Hartshorn were her sixth and seventh of the season, most on the team.
Walker-Hartshorn completed the hat trick early in the second half. She received a long pass near the top of the box, where she touched and turned to her right before netting an open shot past Kufeld.
The Cardinal extended the lead when Lo'eau LaBonta scored her fourth of the season. Her shot from distance was just out of Megan Kufeld's reach and found the back of the net to push the advantage to 4-1.
Kate Bennett led the Huskies with five shots and Jaclyn Softli pressured the backline on the left side throughout the second half. Kufeld finished with seven saves.
