Several 2014 UW Draftees Recognized By Baseball America
October 27, 2014 | Baseball
Baseball America recently released its review of the 2014 Major League Draft for all 30 teams and several Huskies earned mention in the report. After a school-record eight players were selected in the draft, it is not surprising that several Huskies were among the best picks on their teams.
Jeff Brigham was the highest selection among Huskies after being chosen in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-handed pitcher proved to be well-worth the investment by the Dodgers and was mentioned as one of two hurlers in the organization with the best fastball. Brigham played in 11 games this summer for Ogden in the Pioneer Rookie League.
The Pittsburgh Pirates selected shortstop Erik Forgione in the 25th round and the 2014 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year was one of two players mentioned as the organization's top defensive players. He spent this summer playing short-season ball in Jamestown, N.Y.
First baseman Trevor Mitsui was among the Arizona Diamondbacks players named as having the best pro debut. The right-handed hitter was selected in the 30th round and surprised some by swatting 12 home runs and hitting .331 overall for Rookie-level Missoula.
Second baseman Andrew Ely was the last Husky selected in the draft, but ended up being the second player selected in the entire draft to reach as high as the Triple-A level. The Chicago Cubs stole Ely in the 32nd round of the draft, but he was one of five players from the draft class to play Triple-A or higher. Ely was named the Cubs top defensive player from the draft by Baseball America, and he parlayed that into nine games with AAA Iowa in September. First-round pick Carlos Rodon made his AAA debut three days before Ely.
