SEATTLE - Although the Husky Baseball team was unable to determine a winner of the Purple and Gold World Series due to rain forcing the cancellation of the deciding game, the team accomplished a lot during the fall and made a lot of progress towards being able to have another successful season in the spring.
Coach Lindsay Meggs and his team celebrated the closure of fall practice with a team meal and awards ceremony Friday afternoon. Those awarded for showing the most improvement were: senior Alex Schmidt (defense), freshman Shane Olson (offense) and senior Brandon Choate (pitching).
Sophomore Jack Meggs was honored as the Best Bunter, while junior Braden Bishop was named the team's Best Defender. Junior transfer pitcher Ryan Schmitten was named the Best Newcomer.
The award for Hardest Working Base Runner went to Josh Cushing and the Hardest Working Pitcher was Troy Rallings.
Senior Will Sparks was honored with the Most Purple award, which signifies the player with the best preparation and work ethic displayed during camp.
The team returns to the practice field in January. The Huskies open the season February 13-16 with a four-game series at Pacific University in Stockton, Calif.
