STANFORD, Calif. – No. 1 Washington shot the low round of the day at the Stanford Intercollegiate presented by Condoleezza Rice. The Dawgs fired a 6-under 278 to move up into fourth place, just six strokes off the lead.
No. 10 UCLA leads at 8-under, followed by host No. 4 Stanford at 6-under and No. 6 USC at 5-under. The Dawgs outplayed each of its Pac-12 rivals on Saturday, however, climbing to within striking distance on Sunday.
“We played some really tough, gritty golf,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “They were in a nice rhythm all day today. Yesterday, we really struggled on holes 13 through 17, playing them 9-over, but today we were much better.”
Washington was led by Cyd Okino who fired a round of 3-under 69. The junior is now 3-under for the tournament and moved up into a tie for fifth just three shots back of leader Bronte Law of UCLA who is 5-under. Okino made four birdies and just one bogey on Saturday, including a stretch of four birdies in five holes.
“Cyd has played really well this week,” said Mulflur. “It's been good to see.”
Also in the tie for fifth is SooBin Kim, although she is playing as an individual. Kim shot a round of 1-under 70 to get to 3-under for the tournament. She is playing as an individual after some back tightness and didn't want to risk hurting the team if she had to withdraw.
Senior Jennifer Yang and sophomore Eimi Koga both played well on Saturday and are tied for 20th at even-par. Yang fired a second round of 2-under 69 that included three birdies and a bogey. Koga shot a 1-under 70, birdying three of her final eight holes to help Washington climb the leaderboard.
The final scorer for Washington was Ying Luo who shot even-par 71 on Saturday. Luo is now 3-over for the tournament and tied for 39th.
Charlotte Thomas had a tough day, firing a 10-over 81 to fall back into a tie for 70th.
"It was a rough day for Charlotte, obviously," said Mulflur. "I was really proud of how her teammates picked her up, though."
The Dawgs will play out of the second to last group for Sunday's final round. Washington will play with Northwestern and Kentucky beginning at 8:15 a.m. as they try to run down the leaders.
“It's manageable if we go out and play well,” said Mulflur. “The last thing we need to do is go try to win the tournament on the first few holes. We just need to stay in our bubble and keep doing what we've been doing.”
