Purple And Gold World Series Starts Monday
October 17, 2014 | Baseball
SEATTLE - The Husky Baseball team wraps up their fall practice schedule with the annual Purple and Gold World Series at Husky Ballpark, this coming Monday, Oct. 20 through Wednesday, Oct 22. The games will all start around 3:30 p.m. and are open to the general public.
The Purple and Gold World Series is the Huskies' three-game intrasquad series that pits teammate against teammate. The sides will be determined Friday via a draft with this year's captains picking the squads. Washington is coming off a historic season in which they not only opened a state-of-the-art ballpark, but had unparalleled success on the field. The Huskies had their best season in a decade with 41 wins, a school-record No. 5 ranking and a berth in the NCAA Regional finals on the road against Ole Miss.
Although the Huskies saw a school record eight players selected in last June's MLB Draft and lost several other players to graduation, there is still plenty of talent on the UW roster. Third-team All-America pitcher Tyler Davis returns for his senior season after being a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award. All-Pac-12 catcher Austin Rei and All-Pac-12 Defensive Player centerfielder Braden Bishop also return for their junior seasons.
Starting first baseman Branden Berry and third baseman Eric Schmidt are also back, along with many of the arms from the bullpen, including Troy Rallings, Will Ballowe and Brandon Choate. Combined with a group of talented newcomers and up-and-coming returnees, it should be another exciting season for Husky Baseball.
