In his third season on the Washington women's soccer coaching staff is assistant coach Chuck Sekyra. The Huskies earned NCAA Tournament berths during both of his two previous seasons at Washington.
Sekyra joined the UW coaching staff on Aug. 11, 2000 and proceeded to help the Huskies to their finest season ever. Washington posted an 18-3 record, won its first Pac-10 championship, received a No. 2 seed and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Last season, Sekyra helped guide the Huskies to a Pac-10 runner-up finish and their second straight NCAA Tournament berth. UW posted a 13-5-2 record and won their first-round playoff game against San Diego.
Prior to joining the Huskies, Sekyra served the previous two years (1998-99) as an assistant coach with the Seattle Pacific University men's team.
The Falcons were ranked among the top 10 and earned NCAA Division II Tournament berths in each of Sekyra's two seasons on the coaching staff.
While at SPU, Sekyra also was the director of operations and co-coaching director for the highly successful Northwest Soccer Camp.
Sekyra, 36, began his coaching career as the boy's head coach at Seattle's Lakeside High School from 1989-92. He guided his first team to the 1989 state championship game. Lakeside lost a penalty-kick tiebreaker decision to Mt. Rainier.
He then accepted the position as the head coach for both the boy's and girl's teams at Seattle's Blanchet High School, an assignment he handled from 1993-98. The Blanchet boys won the 1998 Metro League championship and advanced to the state quarterfinals.
Sekyra was chosen league coach of the year five times and had a combined record of 181-45-34 at both Blanchet and Lakeside.
He also boasts extensive coaching experience in the club ranks, serving as the head coach for the Washington State Olympic Development Program as well as a regional ODP coach. He served on the Region IV coaching staff in 2001. Sekyra was the Regional U-17 ODP girl's staff coach in 1999 and the Regional U-17 ODP boy's staff coach in 2000. During the summer of 2001, Sekyra coached the Washington State U-23 Select Team to a second-place regional finish in Portland, Ore. His U-23 select squad placed third at the 2000 regional.
Sekyra is familiar with several players on the current Husky roster as seven of them were on his state select team in 2001 after nine played for him during the summer of 2000. He received his U.S. Soccer Federation "A" license, the highest coaching license available, in January of 2001. A former collegiate standout as a player, Sekyra, is one of the links to Seattle Pacific's most successful era.
As a collegian, Sekyra played on Seattle Pacific's back-to-back NCAA Division II championship teams in 1985 and 1986. He made 40 starts on defense and was credited with eight assists from 1985-88.
Sekyra graduated from SPU in 1989 with a degree in political science and history.
Chuck and his wife, Rhonda, have a 5-year-old daughter, Taylor, and reside in Newcastle.
