DAVIS, Calif. - The Washington baseball team displayed resilience in its 2013 season opener, but couldn't quite overcome a couple of early deficits in an 8-4 loss to UC Davis Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
Washington (0-1) gave up three runs in the bottom of the first and were never able to draw even on the first day of NCAA Division I baseball across the nation.
Husky senior center fielder Jayce Ray led the Huskies, going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
UC Davis (1-0) used a Husky miscue to get started in the bottom of the first. After a fielding error and a bunt single put runners at first and second, a double from UCD left fielder Mike Mazzara drove in a pair of runs. Mazzara later scored from third on a two-out, infield single to stake the Aggies to a 3-0 lead after one inning.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the third inning when senior shortstop Ty Afenir led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and scored on a Ray single. Second baseman Robert Pehl followed with a double to left-center, driving in Ray to cut the gap to 3-2.
The Aggies stretched the lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth as two-out singles from John Williams and Paul Politi each plated a run.
But the Huskies drew back within a run once again in the sixth. After a single from Trevor Mitsui and a double from Alex Schmidt, Ryan Wiggins' sacrifice fly drove home Mitsui. Later in the inning, a two-out single from Joe Meggs plated Schmidt, making it a 5-4 UCD lead.
However, UC Davis answered with two of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Mazzara's second double of the day drove in one and a single from Nick Lynch sent home another to make it 7-4. In the seventh, Politi doubled to drive in the Aggies' eighth run.
Aggies starter Harry Stanwyck picked up the victory, allowing four runs on eight hits over five and one-third innings, walking none and fanning five. Trey Lanza pitched the three and two-thirds scoreless innings for the save.
Husky junior starter Austin Voth was stuck with loss. He gave up six runs (four earned) on eight hits over five and one-third. He walked two and struck out five Aggies. Junior reliever Trevor Dunlap held the Aggies scoreless over his two innings of work in his Husky debut.
The Huskies and Aggies play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 11:00 a.m. On Sunday, the season-opening series wraps up with a 1:00 p.m. game.
