Huskies Suffer First Loss At Hands Of Cougars

PROVO, Utah - In a battle of two top 25 teams in Provo, Utah, Saturday night, the host BYU Cougars, ranked No. 17, defeated No. 23 Washington, 3-1.
BYU improved to 8-1 with the win while Washington suffered its first loss of 2012 to fall to 7-1-1.
The Cougars took the lead in the first half and never looked back. Jaiden Thornock scored her first of two goals in the game in the 12th minute on an assist by Lindsi Cutshall and took a 1-0 lead at the half. BYU outshot Washington 9-0 in the first half and had three shots on goal. After 90 minutes, BYU had 13 shots to five for UW.
Although the stats looked lopsided, head coach Lesle Gallimore explained how the game was in fact much closer then it appeared on paper.
"It was a great game; a really great challenge for us and we rose to the occasion," said Gallimore. "We had a plan in place to play at BYU. They (BYU) like to play up and down and fast but we slowed that down. They had a lot of chances but they were from distance. They had about five scary chances and punished us on three of them."
Junior Allie Beahan (Sammamish, Wash.) took Washington's first shot in the game in the 52nd minute. UW was able to put more pressure on the Cougars late in the second half, with shots also by freshman McKenzie Karas and junior Lindsay Elston.
Thornock scored her second goal of the game for BYU, the game-winner, in the 76th minute. That gave BYU a 2-0 lead late in the game.
After a yellow card given to Washington's Stine Schoening in the 81st minute, freshman Isabel Farrell (Bellevue, Wash.) scored a few seconds later to put UW on the board. At this point, the Huskies trailed by just one, 2-1.
BYU came right back and scored in the 84th minute giving itself a two goal lead once again. Jessica Ringwood scored the third Cougar goal on an assist by Michele Murphy.
"The biggest disappointment was when we got it to 2-1. We were pressing and had a ton of composure but got caught in transition in a weird turnover that translated into a goal. I give credit to BYU because they were lethal when they had time and space to hit one," Gallimore added. "It was unfortunate we couldn't keep it 2-1 and use those last few minutes to even it out."
Senior goalkeeper Kari Davidson (Portland, Ore.) made three saves in the game.
"Our back line, Kari, and our midfield, I'm really proud of how they played," Gallimore continued. "Our forwards had moments in and out where we looked dangerous. They couldn't quite find that final pass and weren't as dangerous in front of the goal as we need to be moving forward. That will be a big emphasis as we move into the Pac-12 season. We have a lot of players who can score so we need to get working on how we can create those chances and how we are more cutthroat in and around the 18 yard box."
Pac-12 play begins next week as Washington will travel to USC to play on Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks. It will be the only game of the week for the Huskies.
