Zevenbergen Scores Against Former Husky Solo

TUKWILA, Wash. - A sold out Starfire Stadium of over 4,500 witnessed the UW women's soccer team face the Seattle Sounders Women on Friday night. The game was scoreless at the half but the Sounders pulled out a 3-1 victory with all four goals coming in the final 45 minutes.
The current Huskies, without the 2011 seniors and 2012 freshman, were limited but held their own against several national team members and four former Huskies.
This was the third exhibition game of the season for the Sounders Women who defeated Seattle U and SPU 5-0 each. Former Husky great Hope Solo allowed her first goal of the exhibition season to junior Hillary Zevenbergen.
The Sounders Women starting lineup looked like this: Hope Solo (UW, Team USA), Sydney Leroux (UCLA, Team USA), Kate Deines, Sophie Reiser (Columbia), Keelin Winters (Portland, Team USA camp), Alex Morgan (Cal, Team USA), Stephanie Cox (Portland, Team USA), Megan Rapinoe (Portland, Team USA), Veronica Perez (UW, Mexican National Team), Victoria Frederick (Alabama) and Kelli Smith (Washington).
Current Husky junior Lindsay Elston will play with the Sounders this summer but wore purple in this game. Isabel Farrell was also on the Sounders roster but did not play; she will join the Huskies as a freshman in 2012.
Kari Davidson, Lindsey Bos, Kelsea Brajkovich, Christina Archer, Allie Beahan, Stine Schoening, Annie Sittauer, Faustine Dufka, Hillary Zevenbergen and Molly Boyd got the start for UW.
The game was fast-paced and very physical from the beginning. The Sounders kept possession for the first 14 minutes.
UW's first legit chance came in the 17th minute on a great pass to the right side of the box from Beahan. Brajkovich got to the ball the same time as Solo but Solo swallowed it up. The first shot by UW came in the 19th minute by Zevenbergen to the left side of the net as Solo had no problem gathering it. UW had several good chances from the 17-25th minutes also from Elston and Beahan.
The first threatening shot for the Sounders was by Rapinoe in the 24th minute just left of the goal. Morgan crossed from the right side of the box in the 26th minute but the ball just went out.
Zevenbergen had many great attempts in the game, the first in the 30th minute about 25 yards out just missed high over the net. In the next minute Zevenbergen had another shot but was again scooped up by Solo.
Morgan kicked the ball in the middle of the box 32nd minute, but Boyd cleared it. The pass came from Leroux. Morgan crossed it into the box in the 37th minute but Schoening kicked it out for a corner kick.
In the 40th, Reiser took a shot from about 18 yards out on the right side and just missed left. Perez got tripped in the box in the 41st minute but there was not a PK. A corner kick for Rapinoe went long.
Perez continued to put pressure on her former team, in the 41st minute from about 16 yards out on the right side, she took a hard shot that went right into Boyd as the Huskies cleared.
Just as the first 45 minutes were ending, Leroux took a great shot from 16 yards out but Davidson made a great save pushing the ball out of the top left corner as the whistle blew.
They were several great attempts at the start of the second half as both teams showed more urgency. The Sounders struck first in the 53rd minute as Rapinoe took a corner kick and Davidson saved the shot but the ball was kicked in by Morgan for the lead.
Just six minutes later UW evened the match on a shot that shocked, Solo, Zevenbergen and the crowd. Elston sent a long pass forward to Zevenbergen who beat out former teammate Deines to the left side and shot about 20 yards out right corner of the net past a diving Solo.
The Sounders took many more shots in the second half but the Husky defense and keeper play of Davidson kept the Sounders within reach.
UW had a great chance to take the lead in the 64th minute as Zevenbergen placed a nice ball to the center of box. Chelsea Archer got a head on it and Solo dropped it but it was cleared.
The game-winning goal came from Perez who tapped it in over the head of Davidson about 10 yards out in the 70th minute after a deflection.
Morgan missed a header and hit the cross bar in the next few minutes and Rapinoe also had three good shots late in the game.
The Huskies had a chance to even in the 86th minute with the ball in the box, but it was cleared and the return attempt by Beahan pulled Zevenbergen offsides.
In the 89th minute Lyndsey Patterson sealed the game with a goal, assisted by Perez.
UW closes out the spring season by taking on Oregon State at 5:30 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field. The game is free.
