SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team picked up its eighth shutout victory of the season as the Huskies blanked Portland, 3-0, in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at Husky Ballpark.
UW starter Aaron West (7-5) picked up the win in a scheduled three-inning outing. He gave up four hits, but no runs, while striking out five. UW righties Zach Wright and Austin Voth each pitched two innings of shutout relief and Tyler Kane and Joshua Fredendall worked the eighth and ninth to close out the win. Fredendall earned his ninth save with a perfect ninth.
Pilots starter Matt McAllister (3-3) gave up just two runs (one earned) on four hits over four and two-thirds, but took the loss as Portland dropped to 25-20 on the season.
Washington (27-21) got on the board in the first. Jayce Ray singled up the middle to lead off. After taking second on a bunt and third on a single from Caleb Brown, he came in on a sacrifice fly from Chase Anselment, giving the UW a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies tacked on a second run in the fifth. Catcher B.K. Santy singled to lead off the inning. He took second on a bunt, third on a wild pitch and then scored on a two-out error.
In the sixth, Robert Pehl reached on a two-out double and pinch runner Erik Forgione came in to score on a single from Joe Meggs, increasing the Husky lead to 3-0.
Pehl (2-for-2) and Brown (2-for-3) led the way for the Husky hitters while seven different Pilot batters contributed one hit apiece.
The Huskies head out on the road this weekend for a three-game series at Arizona State.
